Ninurta's return to Nibru: a cir-gida to Ninurta

1-6. Created like An, O son of Enlil, Ninurta, created like Enlil, born by Nintur, mightiest of the Anuna gods, who came forth from the mountain range, imbued with terrible awesomeness, son of Enlil, confident in his strength, my sovereign, you are magnificent -- let your magnificence therefore be praised. Ninurta, you are magnificent -- let your magnificence therefore be praised.

7-12. Sovereign of all the lands, in your massive might, warrior of Enlil, in your great might, fierce warrior, you have taken up the divine powers which are like heaven, son of Enlil, you have taken up the divine powers which are like the earth, you have taken up the divine powers of the mountains, which are heavy as heaven, you have taken up the divine powers of Eridug, which are huge as the earth.

13-15. You have made the gods prostrate (?) themselves before you. You have made the Anuna salute (?) you. Ninurta, you are made complete by heroic strength.

16-17. The utterance of the sovereign is a storm ....... The word of Lord Ninurta is a storm .......

47-51. The warrior ...... made a corpse of the mountains. Lord Ninurta, who destroys (?) ......, made a corpse of the mountains. He piled up ....... The sovereign, with his heroic strength, wreaked his vengeance (?). The warrior Ninurta, with his heroic strength, wreaked his vengeance (?).

52-54. On his shining chariot, which inspires terrible awe, he hung his captured wild bulls on the axle and hung his captured cows on the cross-piece of the yoke.

55-63. He hung the Six-headed wild ram on the dust-guard. He hung the Warrior dragon on the seat. He hung the Magilum boat on the ....... He hung the Bison on the beam. He hung the Mermaid on the foot-board. He hung the Gypsum on the forward part of the yoke. He hung the Strong copper on the inside pole pin (?). He hung the Anzud bird on the front guard. He hung the Seven-headed serpent on the shining cross-beam.

64-69. Lord Ninurta stepped into his battle-worthy chariot. Ud-ane, the all-seeing god, and Lugal-anbara, the bearded (?) lord, went before him, and the awesome one of the mountains, Lugal-kur-dub, the ...... of Lord Ninurta, followed behind him.

70-72. The lion who ...... from the abzu, who ...... An's awesomeness and radiance -- the Anuna, the great gods .......

73-75. As the sovereign swept on like the deluge, as Ninurta, storm of the rebellious land, swept on like the deluge, he rumbled like a storm on the horizon.

76-79. When, at Enlil's command, he was making his way towards E-kur, the warrior of the gods was levelling the Land; and before he had yet approached Nibru from afar, Nuska, the chancellor of Enlil, came forth from the E-kur to meet him.

80-82. He greeted Lord Ninurta: "My sovereign, perfect warrior, heed yourself. Ninurta, perfect warrior, heed yourself."

83-86. "Your radiance has covered Enlil's temple like a cloak. When you step into your chariot, whose creaking is a pleasant sound, heaven and earth tremble. When you raise your arm ......."

87-91. "The Anuna, the great gods ....... Do not frighten your father in his residence. Do not frighten Enlil in his residence. May your father give you gifts because of your heroic strength. May Enlil give you gifts because of your heroic strength."

92-97. "O sovereign, shackle of An, first among the gods, seal-bearer of Enlil, life-source of E-kur, O warrior, because you have toppled the mountains your father need send out no other god beside you. Ninurta, because you have toppled the mountains Enlil need send out no other god beside you."

98-101. While these words were yet in Nuska's mouth, Ninurta put the whip and goad away in the rope-box. He leaned his mace, the strength in battle, against the box and entered into the temple of Enlil.

102-107. He directed his captive wild bulls into the temple. He directed his captive cows, like the wild bulls, into the temple. He laid out the booty of his plundered cities. The Anuna were amazed ....... Enlil, the Great Mountain, made obeisance to him, and Acimbabbar prayed to him.

108-112. The great mother Ninlil, from within her Ki-ur, spoke admiringly to Lord Ninurta: "O wild bull, with fierce horns raised, son of Enlil, you have struck blows in the mountains. Warrior, Lord Ninurta, you have ....... You have ...... the rebellious land."

113-118. Lord Ninurta answered her: "My mother, I alone cannot ...... with you ....... Ninlil, I alone cannot ...... with you, for me alone ....... Battle arrayed like heaven -- no one can rival me (?). Like the deluge ....... Smashing the mountains like reed huts ......."

119-124. "My battle, like an onrushing flood, overflowed in the mountains. With a lion's body and lion's muscles, it rose up in the rebellious land. The gods have become worried and flee (?) to the mountain ranges. They beat their wings like a flock of small birds. They stand hiding in the grass like wild bulls ....... No one can confront my radiance, heavy as heaven."

125-127. "Because I am the lord of the terraced mountain ranges, in every direction ....... Because I have subjugated these mountain ranges of alabaster and lapis lazuli, the Anunahide like mice."

128-134. "Now I have reestablished my heroic strength in the mountains. On my right, I bear my Mows-down-a-myriad. On my left, I bear my Crushes-a-myriad. I bear my Fifty-toothed-storm, my heavenly mace. I bear the hero who comes down from the great mountains, my No-resisting-this-storm. I bear the weapon which devours corpses like a dragon, my agasilig axe. I bear my ......."

135-139. "I bear my ....... I bear the alkad net of the rebellious land, my alkad net. I bear that from which the mountains cannot escape, my cucgal net. I bear the seven-mouthed mucmahserpent, the slayer, my spike (?). I bear that which strips away the mountains, the sword, my heavenly dagger."

140-145. "I bear the deluge of battle, my fifty-headed mace. I bear the storm that attacks humans, my bow and quiver. I bear those which carry off the temples of the rebellious land, my throw-stick and shield. I bear the helper of men, my spear. I bear that which brings forth light like the day, my Obliterator-of-the-mountains. I bear the maintainer of the people in heaven and earth, my The-enemy-cannot-escape."

146-151. "I bear that whose awesome radiance covers the Land, which is grandly suited for my right hand, finished in gold and lapis lazuli, whose presence is amazing, my Object-of-trust. I bear the perfect weapon, exceedingly magnificent, trustworthy in battle, having no equal, well-suited for my wrist on the battlefield, my fifty-headed mace, I bear the weapon which consumes the rebellious land like fire, my fifty-headed club."

152-158. "Let my father therefore bring in my battle trophies and weapons for me. Let Enlilbathe my heroic arms. Let him pour holy water on the fierce arms which bore my weapons. Let him set up a holy dais in the throne room for me. Let him set my heavenly chariot upon a pedestal. Let him tether my captured warriors there like butting bulls. Let him have my captured kings make obeisance to me there, as to the light of heaven."

159-163. "I am the strong one, unopposed in the mountains, I am Ninurta -- let them prostrate themselves at my name. I am the exceedingly mighty lion-headed one of Enlil, whom he engendered in his strength. The storm of heaven, shackle of the gods, I am the one whom Anin his great might has chosen."

164-167. "I am the ......, the life-source of Inana. I am the warrior, destined with Enki to be suited for the fearsome divine powers. Let my kingship be manifest unto the ends of heaven and earth. I am most able among the gods -- let me be imbued with great awesomeness."

168-174. "Let my beloved city, the sanctuary Nibru, raise its head as high as heaven. Let my city be pre-eminent among the cities of my brothers. Let my temple rise (?) the highest ...... among the temples of my brothers. Let the territory of my city be the freshwater well of Sumer. Let the Anuna, my brother gods, bow down there. Let their flying birds establish nests in my city. Let their refugees refresh themselves in my shade."

175-179. As Ninurta went out from Enlil's temple, the most bright-faced of warriors, Ninkarnuna, having heard the favourable pronouncement of Ninurta, stepped before Lord Ninurta and prayed to him:

180-186. "My sovereign, may you be well-disposed towards your beloved city. Lord Ninurta, may you be well-disposed towards your beloved city. May you be well-disposed towards the sanctuary Nibru, your beloved city. When you enter E-cu-me-ca, your beloved temple, alone, tell your wife, young lady Ninnibru, what is in your heart, tell her what is on your mind. Make an enduring favourable pronouncement to her for the king."

187-194. The content of that prayer of the offspring of a prince, Ninkarnuna, his sprinkling Ninurta's heart with an offering of cool water, and the matter of prosperity about which he spoke were pleasing to Ninurta's heart as he went in procession to E-cu-me-ca to manifest the eternal divine powers. Lord Ninurta gazed approvingly at Ninkarnuna.

195-198. When Ninurta entered E-cu-me-ca, his beloved temple, alone, he told his wife, young lady Ninnibru, what was in his heart, he told her what was on his mind and he made an enduring favourable pronouncement to her for the king.

199-201. The warrior, whose heroism is manifest, Ninurta, the son of Enlil, has firmly grounded his greatness in Enlil's sanctuary.

202-207. Lord who has destroyed the mountains, who has no rival, who butts angrily in that magnificent battle, great warrior who goes forth in his ...... might, strong one, deluge of Enlil, Ninurta, magnificent child of E-kur, pride of the father who engendered him, it is sweet to praise you.

il a [...] les moutons sauvages et les cerfs
et a [...] les grands aurochs de la montagne avec leurs [...].
Il se débarrassa alors du vêtement lubushtum, sa tenue de combat.

30 Mon seigneur, de ses bras valeureux,
le fils d'Enlil Ninurta, de ses bras puissants,
32 a fait sortir le mouton sauvage à six têtes de l'imposante montagne de lapis-lazuli,
fait sortir le dragon belliqueux de la grande forteresse de la montagne,

Grâce à ses bras valeureux, le roi remit la main sur elle,

[Il ...] son char étincelant, qui répand une splendeur redoutable.
Au timon, il attacha les aurochs qu'il avait capturés,
au ... du joug, les vaches qu'il avait prises en butin.
Au garde-boue, il attacha le mouton sauvage à six têtes,

55 au siège, le dragon belliqueux,
à la flèche, le magilum,
aux planches de renforcement, le bison,
au repose-pieds, le 'compagnon d'An',
à l'avant du joug, le gypse,

60 au ..., le cuivre puissant,
au tablier, l'oiseau Anzu
et au ... de lapis le serpent à sept têtes.
63 sq. Le seigneur Ninurta monta alors dans son char fait pour la bataille.

65 Uane, le dieu toujours aux aguets,
et Lugalanbadra, le sire barbu, marchaient devant lui,
67 sq. tandis que le seigneur Ninurta s'était fait suivre de Lugalkurtub, la terreur des montagnes.
Le lion qui a reçu les me redoutables de l'Abzu,

70 à qui fut octroyé, depuis le ciel, le rayonnement et la splendeur d'An,
les Anuna , les grands dieux, ne pouvaient l'affronter.
Le roi, un déluge qui passe en nivelant tout,
Ninurta, une tempête dans le pays rebelle, un déluge qui passe en nivelant tout,
gronda comme l'orage à la base du ciel.

75 Comme, à la demande d'Enlil, il s'apprêtait à se rendre vers l'Ekur,
comm le champion des dieux allait dévaster le pays,
avant même que, du ciel lointain, il ne se fût approché de Nippur,
Nuçka, le grand vizir d'Enlil, sortit de l'Ekur et vint à sa rencontre.
Il salua en ces termes le seigneur Ninurta:

80 "Mon roi, champion accompli, prends soin de toi,
prends soin de toi, Ninurta, champion accompli!
Ton éclat redoutable a recouvert comme un manteau le temple d'Enlil,
83 le doux grondement de ton char,
ta venue faisant trembler le ciel et la terre

85 et l'ombre jetée par ton bras levé
ont mis en fuite les grands Anuna partout où ils étaient.
Ne terrifie pas ton père dans sa demeure,
88 ne terrifie pas Enlil dans sa demeure!

90 Ton père, il va te couvrir de cadeaux pour ton héroïsme,
Enlil, il va te couvrir de cadeaux pour ton héroïsme!
Seigneur, carcan d'An, leader des dieux,
'poigne' d'Enlil, source de vitalité pour l'Ekur,
champion, vers la montagne, devenue infranchissable,

95 ton père n'a pas eu besoin d'envoyer un seul dieu pour te seconder!
Ninurta, vers la montagne, devenue infranchissable,
Enlil n'a pas eu besoin d'envoyer un seul dieu pour te seconder!"
Ces paroles n'avaient pas encore quitté sa bouche
que Ninurta rangea dans leur étui fouet et aiguillon,

100 appuya la masse d'armes, le 'bras de la bataille', contre le ... du temple
et entra ensuite, chargé de présents, dans la demeure d'Enlil.
Ayant ordonné le long du temple les aurochs qu'il avait capturés,
[et ayant ...-é] comme les aurochs les vaches attrapées,
il déposa le butin des villes mises à sac.

105 Plongeant les Anuna dans une profonde stupeur, [il ...].
La 'Grande Montagne' Enlil lui rendit humblement hommage
et Dili'imbabbar lui adressa des prières instantes.
La grande mère Ninlil, dans son coeur aimant,
parla alors fort aimablement au seigneur Ninurta:

110 "Aurochs aux cornes redoutables, fils d'Enlil, tu t'es déchaîné dans cette montagne,
champion, seigneur Ninurta, tu as ... dans ce/son ...,
tu as ... le pays rebelle."
Le seigneur Ninurta répondit:
"Ma mère, moi seul, je ne ... avec toi, je/tu ...,

115 Ninlil, moi seul je ne ... avec toi, pour moi seul, on a ...
Ma bataille est ... comme le ciel, comment pourrait-on lui tenir tête ?
Lorsque je me suis levé tel un ouragan, qui oserait m'affronter ?
Quand j'abats la montagne comme une clôture de roseaux, qui pourrait ... avec/contre moi ?
Ma bataille a déferlé sur la montagne telle une immense masse d'eau jaillissante.

120 Me dressant — corps de lion, musculature de lion — dans le pays rebelle,
je dispersai les dieux dans la montagne.
Tels des moineaux, ils ... dans leurs recoins,
tels des aurochs qui ont été chassés, ils se tiennent dans les hautes herbes.
Personne ne peut affronter mon rayonnement, aussi dense que celui du ciel.

125 Je suis le seigneur des montagnes artistiquement bâties, tout l'univers se hâte vers elles.
Ces montagnes, celles d'albâtre et celles de lazulite, je les ai maîtrisées,
si bien que les Anuna se cachèrent comme des souris.
128 Maintenant que j'ai rétabli ma puissance valeureuse sur ces montagnes,
— à ma droite, je portais mon Broie-milliers Sharur,

130 à ma gauche mon Fauche-milliers Shargaz.
Je portais mon Lion-aux-cinquante crocs, ma masse d'armes céleste;
je portais mon Ubanuila, un jeune homme qui rase les grandes montagnes;
je portais ma hache agasilig qui, telle un dragon, dévore des cadavres;
je portais ma lourde massue céleste qui pulvérise les montagnes;

135 je portais mon ... à sept pointes qui soumet les montagnes;
je portais ma hache pour faire des prisonniers, un filet salkad dans le pays rebelle;
je portais mon filet sashushgal qui ne laisse pas échapper les montagnes;
je portais ma pique, un immense serpent à sept crocs faisant des hécatombes;

140 je portais mon grand couteau, mon poignard céleste qui met en pièces les montagnes;
je portais ma massue à cinquante têtes, un ouragan dans la bataille;
je portais mon arc et mon carquois, une tempête déferlant sur les gens;
je portais mon arc composite et mon bouclier qui emportent les maisons des pays rebelles;
je portais ma lance, l'auxiliaire du guerrier;

145 je portais 'Il s'est levé étincelant comme le jour', mon Araseur-de-montagnes;
je portais Nul-ennemi-n'échappe-à-son-bras qui affermit l'univers et notre pays;
147-149 je portais celle dont le rayonnement et la splendeur recouvrent le pays, merveilleusement faite pour
ma dextre, rehaussée d'or et de lapis-lazuli, ma Digne-de-confiance, stupéfiante à contempler;

150 sq. je portais l'arme travaillée avec art, sublime, de loin supérieure à toute autre, sûre et sans égale
pour la bataille, ma massue à cinquante têtes faite pour mon poignet dans les combats;
je portais ma masse d'armes à cinquante têtes qui, tel un incendie, consume tout dans le pays
rebelle —
maintenant donc, puisse-t-on, ô mon père, introduire pour moi dans le temple tout ce qui
touche à ma bataille,
puisse-t-on, ô Enlil, laver mon 'bras valeureux',

155 asperger d'eaux lustrales les redoutables 'bras' de mes armes!
Qu'un siège resplendissant soit préparé pour moi dans la salle du trône,
et qu'on pose sur un piédestal mon char céleste!
Que le licol soit passé aux guerriers que j'ai capturés comme à des aurochs donnant de la corne,
que les rois faits par moi prisonniers me rendent hommage comme à la lumière du ciel!

160 Moi, le fort, une montagne inébranlable,
moi, Ninurta, que tous, à l'invocation de mon nom, se prosternent face contre terre devant moi!
Je suis le dieu aux mains immenses et à la tête léonesque, la créature d'Enlil qu'il a engendrée
pour être son bras vigoureux ;
je suis une tempête au ciel, le carcan des dieux,
celui qu'An a choisi pour être sa dextre puissante;

165 je suis un vent détruisant les montagnes, celui à qui la royauté a été accordée depuis le ciel ;
je suis un bras fort dans la bataille, une source de vitalité pour Innana;
167 je suis le héros qui, suite à un décret du destin, a, grâce à Enki, mis à disposition des me redoutables.
J'ai fait resplendir ma royauté jusqu'aux confins de l'univers.
Moi, le plus puissant des dieux, j'inspire vraiment une profonde crainte.

170 Ma ville bien-aimée, le sanctuaire Nippur, a levé la nuque aussi haut que le ciel.
Que ma ville soit prééminente parmi les villes de mes frères,
que mon temple soit une eau ... fertile/montante pour les temples de mes frères
et que les bords du territoire de ma ville soient le puits d'eau douce de Sumer!
Puissent les Anuna, mes frères divins, se prosterner devant elle,

175 puissent les oiseaux qui ont quitté leur gîte faire leur nid dans ma ville
et les gens qui se sont enfuis de chez eux se rafraîchir à mon ombre!"
177-178 Comme lui, le preux au visage lumineux parmi les guerriers, était sorti du temple d'Enlil,

179-180 Ninkarnuna, ayant ouï ces paroles propices,
se campa devant le seigneur Ninurta et lui adressa une prière:
"Mon roi, puisse ton coeur être serein vis-à-vis de ta ville bien-aimée,
seigneur Ninurta, puisse ton coeur être serein vis-à-vis de ta ville bien-aimée,
puisse ton coeur être serein vis-à-vis du sanctuaire Nippur, ta ville bien-aimée!

185 Lorsque, seul, tu entreras dans ton temple chéri,
186 sq. dis à ton épouse, la jeune Ninnibru, ce que tu as dans la tête, ce que tu as sur le coeur,
dis-lui de doux mots sur le roi — pour toujours!"

189-191 En ce jour, les prières de Ninkarnuna, enfant de prince, furent une offrande d'eau fraîche pour le coeur de Ninurta,
192-195 ses voeux d'abondance lui furent agréables, à lui qui faisait apparaître en pleine lumière les me
ancestraux et s'avançait, radieux, vers l'Eshumesha.
Ayant regardé Ninkarnuna avec bienveillance et lui ayant fixé un bon destin,
il entra, chargé de présents, dans son temple bien-aimé.
198 sq. Il dit à son épouse, la jeune Ninnibru, ce qu'il avait dans la tête, ce qu'il avait sur le coeur,

200 il lui dit de doux mots sur le roi — pour toujours!
Le preux qui a bien montré son héroïsme,
Ninurta, ce fils d'Enlil,
sa grandeur a été établie dans le temple de son père.
O seigneur, pourfendeur des montagnes, toi qui n'as pas d'égal,

205 qui as chargé furieusement dans cette gigantesque bataille,
grand guerrier qui ne doit son importance qu'à lui-même,
puissant, ouragan d'Enlil,
Ninurta, auguste rejeton de l'Ekur,
Toi qui as un grand crédit auprès du père qui t'a engendré, il est doux de te louer!
