Introduction to the Cayce Readings on Health and Healing

No matter what illness or ailment concerns us, certain basic principles about health and healing are relevant. These are the premises upon which all of the Cayce health information rests. For those who would like to make a more careful study of these basic principles, the recommended Circulating File is entitled Principles of Healing. Here, in essence, are the ideas found in that file. They may prove to be very useful to your study of the specific ailment that requires healing for you.

The first fundamental idea about healing requires that we maintain a creative balance between two principles:

  1. 1 - All healing comes from the infinite - that is, from attunement and harmony with our spiritual source. The infinite is just as accessible and available in the visible, physical world as it is in the invisible realm.

  2. 2 - At the same time, each person must take responsibility for his or her own healing process. No one can simply sit back and wait passively for healing to occur.

This second principle - the need for self-responsibility - can take many forms. For example, healing requires attunement, and no one knows better than ourselves exactly what has gotten us out of attunement. Often, if we look closely at our lives, we can see (without needing a gifted medical clairvoyant such as Edgar Cayce) what's causing our illness.

To illustrate self-responsibility further, the human body has a marvelous, innate drive to heal itself, but we've got to do our part to help. A broken bone will naturally try to mend; however, the fracture needs to be set properly for the healing to be complete and effective. Cayce stresses the healing ability of the body:

Remember, the body does gradually renew itself constantly. Do not look upon the conditions which have existed as not being able to be eradicated from the system. . . Hold to that KNOWLEDGE - and don't think of it as just theory - that the body CAN, the body DOES renew itself! 1548-3

Another important principle relates to energy medicine, a new field for which Edgar Cayce was a pioneer. His readings consistently speak of the roles played by vibrations or vibratory forces - right down to the level of individual atoms. According to Cayce, there is a type of consciousness that exists in each atom. Although most of the passages about the atomic physics of healing seem rather esoteric, it might be easier to follow the analogy of the attunement of a stringed musical instrument. A violin or piano that is out of tune makes sour, discordant music - symbolic of disease or illness. Just as a skilled musician can bring the instrument back into attunement, we experience healing when our vibrations - right down to the atomic level - are adjusted in a correct manner. In essence, all healing is bringing the vibrations into harmony from within.

Balance among body, mind, and spirit is another key to Cayce's philosophy of healing. For healing to be complete and lasting, we must recognize and meet the needs of each of these three levels. Virtually no illness or disease can be treated successfully at only one of these three levels.

What's more, Cayce affirms that the human body will naturally stay healthy - and even rejuvenate itself - if a kind of internal balance can be maintained. “Dis-ease” starts when one part of the body draws energy from another part. One portion of an organism may become overcharged with the creative life force, while another portion becomes undernourished. The result is a gradual disintegration of the body and the onset of illness.

The opposite of this sort of disintegration is rejuvenation. The readings assert that we are continuously rebuilding our bodies. Within any seven-year period, each cell is replaced. If we'll allow it, our bodies will transform any problem and resuscitate any condition. But our ingrained habits usually block this healing potential - the habits of action and, even more potent, the habits of mind.

What role do drugs and medicine play in the healing process? Cayce's philosophy clearly sees a place for them, but warns of misunderstanding how they work and of expecting more of them than is possible. Any healing method attempts to create an experience of oneness, in hopes of then stimulating a similar response in the body. For some people in some situations, a drug may be the best way to accomplish this - just as in other cases surgery may be the best way to stimulate healing. Medicines can be a practical application of the one life force. Occasionally they must be very potent in their reactions in order to get the patient through an acute illness. But Cayce from time to time encouraged people to consider the herbal formulas he recommended to be tonics and stimulants, rather than medicines.

The dangerous side of medicines is their potential to diminish the body's own healing work. This is what Cayce alluded to when he warned about “palliatives” that deceive the soul with half-truths and temporary relief. It's also what he meant when he warned that we shouldn't come to rely on any condition outside of ourselves that could be assimilated by the body inwardly. All of this is to say, take the medications prescribed by the physician you trust. Keep in mind this thought: what those chemicals can do is temporarily - and somewhat artificially - give your body an experience of greater oneness.

Healing that really takes hold and lasts must come from changing one's inner consciousness and vibration. That happens most effectively from consistent and persistent human effort (that is, engaging one's desires, purposes, and will) - something that pills all too easily allow us to skip.

These have been long-standing. Do not take the treatments just a few days, or even a few weeks, and expect to be well - and then revert to old conditions. But be consistent and persistent! Have periods when these will be taken (that is, ALL of those things indicated) for two, three to four weeks.

Then rest by leaving them off a week. And then be just as patient and just as persistent as though you were beginning all over again. 976-1

Cayce's healing philosophy includes other insights that can help us avoid misunderstanding. For example, one principle states that the best treatment procedures sometimes cause a temporary worsening of conditions. If we didn't recognize this possibility, we might give up just before the benefits begin to appear. A closely related principle states that when a body is re-establishing its attunement, it tends to be more sensitive. Again, if we misunderstand that heightened sensitivity, we might not see the good that is slowly being effected.

The mind is a focus of other healing principles. The unconscious mind plays a role in many illnesses and diseases. One example of this is the karmic factor in health problems. Memories from previous incarnations, stored in the soul mind, can trigger problems in the body. Of course, we shouldn't go so far as to suppose that every health challenge has past-life roots; nevertheless, the perspective of reincarnation can help us understand what we could possibly be dealing with as we seek healing.

The familiar Cayce axiom, “Mind is the builder,” leads us to wonder exactly which attitudes and emotions best foster healing. The readings emphasize several:

  • - Self-acceptance. As we rid ourselves of self-condemnation, we make room for healing forces to enter.

  • - Optimism and hope. We're encouraged to expect healing.

  • - Patience. It's much easier and quicker to destroy health than it is to rebuild it. We need to be willing to patiently invest whatever time is required.

Alongside these specific attitudes and emotions, we're invited to use the creative potential of visualization to stimulate our own healing. The mind's image-making capacity can be directed in such a way that we “see” the healing transformation taking place. This is not something that's accomplished in a single visualization session. Like all the Cayce health-promoting approaches, it requires persistence and works best in conjunction with other healing methods.

Perhaps the most important principle of the mind's relationship to healing concerns purposefulness. A person can experience temporarily an outer healing - that is, in the physical body only - yet still be spiritually sick. What cures the soul? A commitment to a purposeful life. Not just any purpose, but instead one that reflects care for other people.

On occasion a reading from Cayce would pose this question to the person who was ill: What would you do with your life if you were healed?

What would the body be healed for? That it might gratify its own physical appetites? That it might add to its own selfishness? Then (if so) it had better remain as it is. . . But first the change of heart, the change of mind, the change of purpose, the change of intent. 3124-2

The position of Cayce's psychic source was simply this: Why correct the physical condition unless there's also going to be an inner correction? People who are looking for both inner and outer healing are the best candidates for restored health and vitality. In Cayce's philosophy, healing should equip us to be more useful to others.

With this ideal of service in mind, we might also wonder just how we can be channels of healing to others. What principles govern our efforts to be healers to those for whom we have concern? One principle is based on the spiritual connections that exist between all people. It states that as we bring the experience of oneness into our own consciousness, it can profoundly help someone else experience oneness, attunement, and healing. Cayce's way of putting it was, “...raising the Christ Consciousness in self to such an extent as it may flow out of self to him thou would direct it to.” (281-7)

For this to be most effective, the recipient must desire such help and have requested healing prayer. Of course, we can always pray for someone, even if that individual hasn't asked us. But it's important that we not assume we know what's needed in any person's life. For one who hasn't specifically asked for prayer, we can simply offer prayers of protection and blessing, rather than try to direct healing energies to that person or for a specific condition.

It is also important to remember that each reading was given for an individual. It must be emphasized that no suggested treatments for any particular ailments should be "lifted" from any individual reading and tried by another individual except under the supervision of and with the cooperation of a physician or licensed health care professional. However, there were many suggestions that were given over and over, and these can be studied to find how they apply to ourselves. These healing principles can be grouped in four categories that referred to as CARE.

Circulation moving the blood around the body through therapies such as massage or spinal manipulation

Assimilation encouraging the body to pull the proper nutrients from the food by eating the proper foods and in the proper combinations

Relaxation taking time to rest and let the body recuperate and counterbalance the daily activities

Elimination removing the waste products from the body through therapies such as sweats, colonics, and fume baths

For more information about CARE and recommendations on the lifestyle described in the readings, please see Dr. Harold J. Reilly’s Handbook for Health. There are also many verbatim collections of the readings in other Circulating Files, Research Bulletins, and Treatment Plans for individual diseases which may be purchased through Customer Service at 800-333-4499.

The A.R.E. is interested in having all the material in the health readings reviewed by physicians and health care professionals who also provide summaries of their findings in the hope that the information may prove beneficial to others. When time and finances permit it is planned to have all the information in the health readings read by one or more physicians and the subject matter summarized. Please send any feedback to :

In summary, the Cayce readings remind us that our natural state is wholeness and health. An innate wisdom within ourselves knows what's needed for healing. We should expect to get well, and we should be willing to do our part to make it possible. “Those that expect little of the Lord receive little; those that expect much receive much - if they live it!” 1424-1

Overview on Autism

Autism is not a disease, but a developmental disorder of brain function. People with classical autism show three types of symptoms: impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication and imagination, and unusual or severely limited activities and interests. Symptoms of autism usually appear during the first three years of childhood and continue throughout life. Although there is no cure, appropriate management may foster relatively normal development and reduce undesirable behaviors. People with autism have a normal life expectancy.

Autism affects an estimated two to 10 of every 10, 000 people, depending on the diagnostic criteria used. Most estimates that include people with similar disorders are two to three times greater. Autism strikes males about four times as often as females, and has been found throughout the world in people of all racial and social backgrounds.

Autism varies a great deal in severity. The most severe cases are marked by extremely repetitive, unusual, self-injurious, and aggressive behavior. This behavior may persist over time and prove very difficult to change, posing a tremendous challenge to those who must live with, treat, and teach these individuals. The mildest forms of autism resemble a personality disorder associated with a perceived learning disability.

The hallmark feature of autism is impaired social interaction. Children with autism may fail to respond to their names and often avoid looking at other people. Such children often have difficulty interpreting tone of voice or facial expressions and do not respond to others' emotions or watch other people's faces for cues about appropriate behavior. They appear unaware of others' feelings toward them and of the negative impact of their behavior on other people.

Many children with autism engage in repetitive movements such as rocking and hair twirling, or in self-injurious behavior such as biting or head-banging.

They also tend to start speaking later than other children and may refer to themselves by name instead of "I" or "me." Some speak in a sing-song voice about a narrow range of favorite topics, with little regard for the interests of the person to whom they are speaking.

People with autism often have abnormal responses to sounds, touch, or other sensory stimulation. Many show reduced sensitivity to pain. They also may be extraordinarily sensitive to other sensations. These unusual sensitivities may contribute to behavioral symptoms such as resistance to being cuddled.

Autism is classified as one of the pervasive developmental disorders.

Some doctors also use terms such as "emotionally disturbed" to describe people with autism. Because it varies widely in its severity and symptoms, autism may go unrecognized, especially in mildly affected individuals or in those with multiple handicaps. Researchers and therapists have developed several sets of diagnostic criteria for autism. Some frequently used criteria include:

  • Absence or impairment of imaginative and social play

  • Impaired ability to make friends with peers

  • Impaired ability to initiate or sustain a conversation with others

  • Stereotyped, repetitive, or unusual use of language

  • Restricted patterns of interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus

  • Apparently inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals

  • Preoccupation with parts of objects

Since hearing problems can be confused with autism, children with delayed speech development should always have their hearing checked. Children sometimes have impaired hearing in addition to autism.

Autism has no single cause. Researchers believe several genes, as well as environmental factors such as viruses or chemicals, contribute to the disorder.

Symptoms in many children with autism improve with intervention or as the children mature. Some people with autism eventually lead normal or near-normal lives. However, reports from parents of children with autism indicate that some children's language skills regress early in life, usually before age three. This regression often seems linked to epilepsy or seizure-like brain activity.

Adolescence also worsens behavior problems in some children with autism, who may become depressed or increasingly unmanageable. Parents should be ready to adjust treatment for their child's changing needs.

From a standard medical perspective, there is no cure for autism at present. Therapies, or interventions, are designed to remedy specific symptoms in each individual. The best-studied therapies include educational/behavioral and medical interventions. Although these interventions do not cure autism, they often bring about substantial improvement.

(Note: The above information comes from National Institutes of Health Publication No. 96-1877)

The Edgar Cayce Perspective of Autism

Edgar Cayce gave several readings for individuals exhibiting autistic features. Because Edgar Cayce was more interested in the uniqueness of each individual than in diagnostic labels, we cannot be certain as to whether these cases are representative of autism. The word autism was never used in any reading or correspondence. However, descriptions of behaviors and functioning do suggest that certain persons who received readings may have suffered from autism.

Notably, three readings given for an eight-year-old girl (2253), are indicative of autism.

(Q) Why does she not talk?
(A) This reaction, or refractory reaction in system, prevents the contraction in the muscular forces that have to do with the plexus from the secondary cardiac to the central nerve system. This is directly to the vocal box. In the corrections in the 3rd and 4th dorsal, and the 2nd and 3rd cervical, this will be stimulated, see? as will necessary later to stimulate along the eustachian tube for the reaction there, see? This NOT in the beginning.
The manipulations we would make at least three times each week, and ONE of the treatments and ADJUSTMENT treatment - the other the drainages set up and the muscular forces and tendons so relaxed as to make for the feeding out or building up of nerve impulses as between the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal system.

(Q) Why does she wring her hands?
(A) Nervous reaction. When these come, there is some form of expression and in the attempt to find an outlet for that INNATELY felt, the lack of knowing WHAT to do - see?

(Q) Will she ever be able to understand and carry out a spoken suggestion?
(A) She will, if these [treatments] are carried out as has been outlined.

(Q) Where will the first improvement be noticed?
(A) The gradual relaxation, and NOT so nervous.

(Q) Is her brain alright, or just dormant?
(A) Just dormant. (2253-1)

Edgar Cayce traced the cause of the condition to pressures along the spine where nerve plexus coordinate the functioning of the system. Nervous system incoordination resulted producing a disturbance to the "imaginative nerve forces of the body" causing the child to be "over sensitive."

The pressures, as we find, exist principally in those of the sacral, the lower dorsal, and the WHOLE of the cervical areas. These are especially seen in the 4th LUMBAR plexus, that prevents coordination in the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal impulses; while those of the central or lower dorsal, sympathetically with the upper or 4th and 5th dorsal, prevent those impulses to the central nerve force as to cause any reaction in this direction, and little or no response is seen in that of a refractory reaction, save as comes through impulses in the imaginative nerve forces of the body. Hence those tendencies of the body to be over sensitive to certain vibrations that may be set up, without the proper coordinating even to BRAIN impulses as to WHAT the reaction SHOULD be. Hence often the body responds in a manner as apparently directly opposite from that as would be, or should be, expected from voluntary or involuntary refractory, or refraction. (2253-1)

Osteopathic manipulations to relieve the pressure were recommended. A mild, natural herbal formula (containing mayblossom and ginseng) was suggested to calm and sedate the child. An energy medicine device (Radial Appliance) was prescribed to assist in coordinating the system.

Hypnotic suggestion was consistently recommended in such cases. Edgar Cayce sometimes used the expression "suggestive therapeutics" to describe a simple, natural form of suggestion to be used. Suggestion was recommended to address the habitual, involuntary hand wringing and lack of normal development:

...as the body sinks to sleep - the talk, the quieting effect, the improvements through the psychopathic effect that may be created by suggestion as the body goes to sleep. Something as this, though it may be altered according to that one giving same. Do not make same as rote, or as just something to be said, but with that intense desire to be a channel of aid and help TO the individual:

AS YOU (calling the child by ITS OWN name, that it responds to even by any FORM of suggestion) AS YOU SINK INTO A QUIET RESTFUL SLEEP, THE ORGANS OF THE BODY WILL SO FUNCTION THAT THE VERY BEST WILL BE BUILDED IN THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL BEING, GIVING THAT RESPONSE THAT WILL BE A NORMAL ACTIVITY FOR THE ORGANS OF THE SENSORY SYSTEM. (2253-2)

(Q) Is there anything we can do to get her to stop wringing her hands?
(A) Only applying those things that will alter the present nervous reactions in the system will change same. THIS body, would be well for the suggestions to be made under the influence of hypnosis, or auto- suggestion to the body as it sleeps. This must be made by someone in sympathy with the activities of the body, and THIS would relieve such stress on the general system. (2253-3)

Although we have no long-term documentation in this case, a letter from Mrs. Pope of the Rosehill School (where the child was staying) noted, "I think she has improved noticeably and more so since she has had the battery although it has been used such a short time."

Four readings were given for a nineteen-year-old male [2014] who had been "abnormal about eleven years" and who was exhibiting repetitious, involuntary movements and antisocial behaviors:

(Q) What is the reason for, and what can be done for the habit reaction he has; such as the spitting, drawing of the mouth down, and waving of the fingers before his nose and mouth?
(A) These, as indicated, are reflexes through the sensory nerve system; lack of coordination between impulses and the guided or directed forces in the mental reactions of same. Keep up the applications indicated for corrections, making the suggestions - and not attempting to control by violent means! (2014-3)

(Q) Would you advise scolding or hitting him, when he is so uncontrollable? or what method would you advise
(A) Patience, kindness, gentleness, ever; not in that of scolding or tormenting at all. But in cajoling, and in kindness and in patience, these are the manners. Remember, these conditions are for purposes. While they become very trying to the individuals who attempt to administer to the needs of the body, know that these are purposeful in thine own experience also.

(Q) Is this stubborn, fresh and disobedient attitude due to his ailment?
(A) Due to the ailment; else there would be other measures indicated. And in the building up of the body, there must be the response to kindness and gentleness and love, - more than to force, power, might, hate or scolding. (2014-2)

Again, this series of readings described nervous system incoordination involving the sensory nervous system. Pressures along the spine and in the abdominal nerve plexus associated with the digestive system were noted.

Abdominal castor oil packs and spinal manipulations were suggested to relieve the pressures and coordinate the nervous systems. The Radial Appliance was also recommended to assist with the coordination. A mild laxative tea was prescribed to improve eliminations through the colon as chronic constipation was a problem.

For the behavioral problems and general pathological conditions, suggestive therapeutics was recommended:

(Q) What type of suggestion would you recommend?
(A) As just indicated, the type that is to be given continually; of the creative forces or God, - love manifesting through the activities of the body. These as helpful forces will bring the bettered conditions for this body. (2014-3)

The minimal follow-up correspondence does not indicate whether the recommendations were applied consistently or the eventual outcome in this case.

A series of twelve readings were given for a young girl (1179) who was seven years old when she received her first reading. Her readings and follow up correspondence suggest possible mild autism. Her readings described a "supersenstive" system with psychic or imaginative tendencies:

These conditions are rather of the unusual nature; or the body physically and mentally is supersensitive and the psychic forces are developing much faster than the bodily functionings. Or the body functionings are of such a nature that the sensitiveness of same precludes some activities through the nominal physical developments. (1179-1)

There are periods when there are unusual activities in the psychic forces of the body. The imaginative reactions to the sensory and the external forces in the experience of the body at times find physical expression in moods. (1179-7)

The child was somewhat withdrawn and difficult. Her mother's comment immediately following 1179-1: "Now I know better how to cope with this child, who reacts so differently from my other children - she is so unusual in so many ways."

The mother's difficulty in dealing with the child's antisocial behaviors was noted:

DO NOT make it an issue with the body! Advise with, but do not rave at nor scold nor make the entity conscious of same by constant nagging, or insistency! And this will be better, it will be found, in ALL the ways of IMPRESSING the body in ANY manner for any activity.

As has been indicated, the body is supersensitive, and is made aware of self's shortcomings or self's virtues by a continual impressing on same.

Listen to the entity's arguments, always. Never tell her to shut up or stop,

but hear it out! Then, parallel same by counsel as respecting what MIGHT be better if paralleled in THAT direction. (1179-6)

Social withdrawal and interpersonal deficits were cited in the correspondence. The child also apparently had some difficulty with reading.

Edgar Cayce described problems with the digestive system which were contributing to the difficult psychosocial development of this child. Various digestive aids and nutritional supplements were recommended, including Ventriculin, a dietary supplement made from the gastric tissue of hogs.

As with the other cases cited above, the Radial Active appliance was suggested to assist with nervous system coordination. Spinal manipulations were recommended. A basic diet, focusing on body building foods, was emphasized. In one reading, when asked about substituting other grains for wheat, Edgar Cayce responded:

(Q) Should the body discontinue the use of wheat products, substituting RYE BREAD, WHITE RICE, OATMEAL CEREAL, BUCKWHEAT AND CORNMEAL PANCAKES?
It would be well to discontinue the greater portion of the wheat products, if these others are used - and they are all very well to be used. (1179-5)

  1. Although suggestive therapeutics was not directly mentioned, the readings did insist on the importance of providing spiritual guidance to the child through Bible stories.

According to correspondence from her mother, Ms. 1179 became a school teacher at age twenty-two and married thirteen years later.

Although the above cases vary greatly with regard to symptoms and severity, some common themes are worth noting. In all these cases Edgar Cayce focused on nervous system incoordination involving the sensory nervous system. All these individuals were described as over sensitive (even "super- sensitive"). Nerve pressures were cited as causative factors. Spinal manipulation was consistently recommended, as was the use of the Radial Appliance to assist with balancing and coordinating the system.

Problems with the digestive system and intestinal tract was significant in two of these cases (1179 and 2014). Therapies such as abdominal castor oil packs, diet, and dietary supplements were suggested.

The mental and spiritual aspects of healing were prominent in all three cases. Suggestive therapeutics was usually recommended. The spiritual focus of the family and caregivers was strongly emphasized.

Thus a blending of treatments into a well integrated treatment plan was often recommended by Edgar Cayce for the treatment of autism. Here is a summary of some of the most common treatment recommendations.

    Treatment Recommendations

Conceptually, the Cayce approach to autism focuses on assisting the body in healing itself by the application of a variety of therapies intended to address the underlying causes of the condition. The mental and spiritual aspects of healing are strongly emphasized.

Here are some general therapeutic recommendations intended to address the underlying causes of autism:

    1. 1. MANUAL THERAPY (SPINAL MANIPULATION): Cayce often recommended spinal manipulations to correct specific problems which may be a primary cause of autism. It is difficult to obtain the osteopathic adjustments specified by Cayce. However, a chiropractor may be of help. The frequency of the adjustments will depend on the recommendations of the individual chiropractor or osteopath. The use of an electric vibrator may also be helpful for individuals unable to obtain regular spinal adjustments.

    2. 2. ELECTROTHERAPY: Regular use of the Radial Appliance to coordinate nerve functioning and circulation is recommended.

    3. 3. INTERNAL CLEANSING: Because autistic symptoms were sometimes linked to problems with the alimentary canal resulting in poor eliminations, hydrotherapy is recommended to improve eliminations through the colon. Hydrotherapy includes drinking six to eight glasses of pure water daily and obtaining colonic irrigations to cleanse the bowel. Following the diet should also assist with internal cleansing. Hot castor oil packs applied over the abdomen are recommended to improve circulation (especially lymphatic) and eliminations through the alimentary canal.

    4. 4. DIET: The Basic Cayce Diet is intended to improve assimilation and elimination. The diet focuses heavily on keeping a proper alkaline/acid balance while avoiding foods which produce toxicity and drain the system. Essentially, the diet consists mainly of fruits and vegetables while avoiding fried foods and refined carbohydrates ("junk food"). Certain food combinations are emphasized.

    5. 5. SUGGESTIVE THERAPEUTICS: The use positive suggestions during the presleep period and during therapy sessions (such as massage and the Radial Appliance) is recommended to awaken the inner healing response. The spiritual attunement of the caregiver is essential. (see page 79)

    6. 6. MEDICATION: The use of a mild natural sedative (such as Passion Flower fusion) may be helpful for excitable children. Laxatives and dietary supplements may be helpful, particularly for individuals with significant gastrointestinal symptoms. Although Ventriculin is no longer available, similar products such as Secretin (made from hog gastric tissue and available only by physician's prescription) have proven helpful for some persons suffering from autism.

Autism, by David McMillin

True Health, October 2003 Physical-Mental-Spiritual

Even with tighter diagnostic criteria used in the United States be number of children with autism in this country continues to rise. As evidence of this disturbing trend, a recent report on autism in California indicates that cases of autism have nearly doubled in the last four years. Dr. Ron Huff, senior psychologist who oversaw the preparation of the report observed, "The number of cases is accelerating and we do not know why."

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that autism occurs in approximately two to seven cases per 1, 000 children in the United States at an annual cost of about three billion dollars. The CDC is currently studying the prevalence of autism in thirteen states. The results of the study will help determine whether the alarming rise in autism in California is a national trend.

What Is Autism?

Hollywood has featured characters with autistic features in several popular movies, including Rain Man and Mercury Rising. Whereas the portrayal of autism in these films tends to focus on autistic individuals as extraordinarily gifted in mathematics ("autistic savants") who are socially inept, the reality of this disorder is much more complex.

Autism manifests along a spectrum from mild to severe with symptoms that can present in a wide variety of combinations. People with classical autism show three types of symptoms: impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication and imagination, and unusual or severely limited activities and interests. However, some individuals with autism may make eye contact, show affection, smile and laugh, and demonstrate a variety of other emotions.

Symptoms of autism usually appear during the first three years of childhood and continue throughout life. Although there is no cure, appropriate management may foster relatively normal development and reduce undesirable behaviors.

Possible Causes of Autism

Medical science has not yet identified a definite cause of autism. Heredity is a likely factor, probably as a predisposition rather than an absolute cause.

Some researchers believe that problems during pregnancy or delivery, environmental factors (such as viral infections or exposure to toxins), or inherent metabolic imbalances produce autism. Autism is not caused by bad parenting - there are no known psychological factors that have been shown to cause autism.

There is strong evidence that the sensory nervous system is abnormal in autism. Many of the symptoms of autism can be explained as reactions caused by overstimulation or understimulation of the sensory system. As a result, children with autism are unable to fully integrate or organize stimuli in the brain. Thus, seemingly mild sensory stimuli can overwhelm the system and provoke social withdrawal or other autistic behaviors. We will revisit this aspect of autism when we review the Cayce approach later in this article.

A possible link of autism to childhood vaccination stirred up a storm of controversy a few years ago when researchers in England published reports that autism may be linked to MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) shots. Subsequently, a committee formed to investigate these initial findings concluded that the evidence does not support the autism/MMR vaccine connection, although the concept cannot be entirely ruled out as a factor in some cases.

Ironically, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the autism researcher who first publicized the potential link between MMR vaccine and autism was fired by the Royal Free Hospital in London one day after a researcher at Harvard University substantially replicated his findings. Keeping a positive frame of mind, Dr. Wakefield philosophically observed, "I realize now that everything that has happened to me was inevitable from the beginning. If you offend the system, then the system will take its revenge. One great benefit of this arrangement is that I shall no longer have to spend a considerable amount of time in distracting political negotiations with the Medical School and will be able to devote 100% of my effort to the research."

The Gut Connection

One of the most fascinating and exciting outcomes of Dr. Wakefield's work is the discovery of a possible gut connection in the cause and treatment of autism, adding autism to the growing list of neurological illnesses with abdominal features.

While researching the MMR/autism association, Dr. Wakefield investigated a consecutive series of children with chronic enterocolitis (bowel inflammation) and autistic symptoms. The twelve children (average age six years) had a history of normal development followed by loss of acquired skills (including language) together with diarrhea and abdominal pain.

In a related project forty-seven out of fifty autistic children studied exhibited significant bowel pathology. When subjected to colon cleansing, these children showed notable improvement in their autism symptoms. The researchers concluded, "We reemphasize the fact that there is a consistent pattern of gut inflammation in a high proportion of children within the broad autistic spectrum. Understanding the link between the bowel and the brain in autism may allow new insights into this devastating illness."

Dr. Timothy Buie, the Harvard pediatric gastroenterologist who first replicated Wakefield's findings on the MMR/autism connection, has reported finding chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract in a significant number of over 400 gastrointestinal endoscopies with biopsies conducted on children with autism. These findings are leading Dr. Buie to conduct more research into dietary treatments for autism, including gluten-free/casein-free diets for autistic children.

Further evidence of intestinal involvement in autism surfaced after a substance called secretin proved surprisingly effective in the treatment of autism for some children. After Victoria and Gary Beck successfully treated their autistic child with secretin and triggered interest in this substance, researchers at University of Maryland studied the therapeutic effects of secretin on three autistic children and noted significant clinical improvement, both gastrointestinal and behavioral.

Secretin is a natural substance, produced in the intestinal tract by all mammals. While it is not a drug and not harmful, the FDA nevertheless requires that it be sold only by prescription.

Secretin is now being tested with more autistic children to determine its therapeutic potential. As in the MMR/autism debate, some early studies have failed to support the role of secretin as a treatment for autism. Researchers acknowledge the tentative nature of the findings and the need for further research. See the article on page 3 of this newsletter for some pointers on how to understand conflicting research findings and the implications for lay people who just want practical answers to health questions.

The Cayce Perspective

Although the medical diagnosis of autism was not available during Edgar Cayce's era, several readings given for individuals exhibiting autistic features may provide some insight into this disorder. Most notably, three readings given for an eight-year-old girl [2253] are indicative of autism. This child would not talk and continuously wrung her hands. Edgar Cayce traced the cause of the condition to pressures along the spine that produced aberrant nerve impulses, making the child "oversensitive." Osteopathic manipulations to relieve the pressure were recommended. A mild, natural herbal formula was suggested to calm the child. An energy medicine device (Radial Appliance) was prescribed to balance the system.

Hypnotic suggestion ("suggestive therapeutics") was recommended to address the habitual, involuntary hand wringing, lack of normal development, and sensory system oversensitivity.

Although we have no long-term documentation in this case, a letter from Mrs. Pope of the Rosehill School (where the child was staying) noted, "I think she has improved noticeably and more so since she has had the battery although it has been used such a short time."

In another case, four readings were given for a nineteen-year-old male [2014] who was exhibiting repetitious, involuntary movements and antisocial behaviors. This series of readings also described nervous system incoordination involving the sensory nervous system. Pressures along the spine and in the abdominal nerve plexus associated with the digestive system were noted. The treatment plan was very similar to the first case. The minimal follow-up correspondence does not indicate whether the recommendations were applied or the eventual outcome.

A series of twelve readings were given for a young girl [1179] who was seven years old when she received her first reading. Her readings and follow up correspondence suggest possible mild autism. In this case, Edgar Cayce described problems with the digestive system that were contributing to the difficult psychosocial development of this child. Various digestive aids and nutritional supplements were recommended, including Ventriculin, a dietary supplement made from the gastric tissue (a possible parallel to secretin?).

Otherwise the treatment plan was very consistent with previous cases we have reviewed. Considering the current research linking autism to wheat sensitivities, this case does contain a fascinating response to a question about substituting other grains (rye, rice, oats, buckwheat, or corn) for wheat. Cayce advised, "It would be well to discontinue the greater portion of the wheat products, if these others are used - and they are all very well to be used." (1179- 5) According to correspondence from her mother, Ms. [1179] became a school teacher at age twenty-two and married thirteen years later.

Although the above cases vary somewhat with regard to symptoms and severity, some common themes are worth noting. In all these cases Edgar Cayce focused on nervous system incoordination involving the sensory nervous system. All these individuals were described as oversensitive (even "supersensitive").

Thus, a blending of therapies into an integrated treatment plan was the typical approach by Cayce for the treatment of conditions that are currently called autism.

The A.R.E. has available a treatment protocol for autism that can be obtained from Membership services.

Autism and the Gut Brain
Meridian Institute News
November, 1998

One of the fascinating themes which runs through the Cayce health information is the role of the abdominal nervous system (the so-called "abdominal brain,"1 "gut brain,"2 "enteric nervous system,"2, 3) with regard to a diversity of conditions, especially neurological diseases. For example, Meridian research programs have investigated the intestinal connection in epilepsy and migraine, two neurological illnesses which the Cayce readings say are often caused by problems in the abdomen which irritate the "gut" brain. The irritation is then referred to the cerebral brain culminating in the distinctive symptoms of these illnesses. The medical literature attests to these interactions with numerous articles on "abdominal migraine" and "abdominal epilepsy." However, most neurologists would regard gastro-intestinal features as merely a side effect of the cerebral pathology.

Some recent medical research may add yet another condition to this list of neurological diseases with abdominal features. Autism has been linked to intestinal problems and has been successfully treated with a substance called secretin, derived from the gut of hogs.

Wakefield et al investigated a consecutive series of children with chronic enterocolitis and regressive developmental disorder.4 The twelve children (mean age 6 years) had a history of normal development followed by loss of acquired skills, including language, together with diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Additionally, Murch et al (1998) report that 47 out of 50 autistic children they studied showed significant bowel pathology.5 When subjected to colon cleansing, these children showed notable improvement in their autism symptoms. The researchers conclude, "We re-emphasize the fact that there is a consistent pattern of gut inflammation in a high proportion of children within the broad autistic spectrum. Understanding the link between the bowel and the brain in autism may allow new insights into this devastating illness."5

Further evidence of intestinal involvement in autism has surfaced when a substance called secretion has been surprisingly effective in the treatment of autism for some children. After Victoria and Gary Beck successfully treated their autistic child with secretin and triggered interest in this substance, Horvath et al studied the therapeutic effects of secretin on three autistic children and noted significant clinical improvement, both gastrointestinal and behavioral.6 Secretin is now being tested with more autistic children to determine its potential.

Secretin is a natural substance, produced in the intestinal tract by all mammals. While it is not a drug, and it is not harmful, the FDA nevertheless requires that it be sold only by prescription. Secretin is usually given by slow injection (infusion), but there are other methods of administration which are being considered. The only FDA-approved use for secretin is in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal problems, not as a treatment for any disorder.

Interestingly, secretin is similar to Ventriculin, a product recommended by Edgar Cayce for a child exhibiting mild autistic symptoms (case 1179).

Ventriculin was manufactured by Parke-Davis until the mid or late 1950s.

Ventriculin was derived from the gastric tissue of hogs. It was taken orally in powder form for general debilitation, anemia, poor assimilations, and a wide range of other conditions associated with the digestive system.

Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.,
My dear Mr. Cayce,
For sometime I have been very interested in the work you are doing because I have been studying along the lines of Spiritual healing and in this school there are so many children that need help in that way. There is one little girl in particular that I would like to have you help. Will you write me if you could give a reading for her and how soon?
Hoping to receive a letter about this, I am,
Sincerely yours, [signed] (Mrs.) Anne M. Pope

(Physical Suggestion)

  1. 1. EC: Yes, we have the body and those conditions that surround the body, [2253]. Now, we find there are disturbing conditions in the physical forces of the body. These have to do with some structural positions, as well as those of undevelopment or undeveloped conditions in the physical forces; these affecting directly the sensory organism, especially the auditory forces, as well as those of the central nerve system.

  2. 2. The conditions, as we find, may be MATERIALLY aided in such a way and manner as to not only remove much of the pressure, as PREVENTS the reaction, but that in the developments of those portions that have been cut off there may be made those closer coordinations in the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal nerve impulses, as to make for an awakening of reaction in the sensory system, as well as the mental and physical responses in these directions.

  3. 3. The pressures, as we find, exist principally in those of the sacral, the lower dorsal, and the WHOLE of the cervical areas. These are especially seen in the 4th LUMBAR plexus, that prevents coordination in the sympathetic and cerebro- spinal impulses; while those of the central or lower dorsal, sympathetically with the upper or 4th and 5th dorsal, prevent those impulses to the central nerve force as to cause any reaction in this direction, and little or no response is seen in that of a refractory reaction, save as comes through impulses in the imaginative nerve forces of the body.

  4. 4. In meeting, then, the needs of the conditions - while the care and the attention that HAS been given is well, but for the correction there should be those adjustments osteopathically made that would RELIEVE these pressures along the cerebro-spinal system, and AS they are removed we would add those elements in the system as will make for a reaction in NERVE impulses. As we see, the nerve system, or nerve matter itself, is made up of vibrations from the system in its resuscitating or building forces. These, as we find, may be had from the use of those compounds in the Mayblossom WITH those of the Ginseng, as will STIMULATE those impulses of the body. These will also make for a better coordination in refraction and refractory reactions in, or between cerebro-spinal and sympathetic system.

  5. 5. Those centers, then, that need the adjustments, will be found in those regions in lumbar, in the upper dorsal AND cervical, that make for closer connection between the cerebro-spinal and sympathetic plexus.

  6. 6. We would also add those vibrations, at least as the body rests, from the Radio- Active Appliance, that make for coordination in the extremities of the system.

The plain battery charge should be used.

  7. 7. Well, too, that occasionally (and as sincere as this is made is the response to be expected or had), as the body sinks into sleep or unconsciousness, that those suggestions of a positive nature be given to the subconscious forces of the body. Do that.

  8. 8. Those connections in the manipulative forces may be made that will be most satisfactory. Later we will use a change IN the applications of a changed electric vibratory rate for the body. Ready for questions.

  9. 9. (Q) What should be the dosage of the Mayblossom Bitters, and how should the Ginseng be added - in what quantity?

    1. These have been outlined, as to the preparation. As to the dosage in this particular case, we would give morning AND evening a half teaspoonful in little water or plain. As the body is ready for rest, and as the body - before it takes up its activities - these would be given, see?

  10. 10. (Q) If there is an osteopath near Rosehill that will be cooperative, please name.

    1. Media. Blair or Blaine (?).

  11. 11. (Q) Please give name and address.

    1. As given. Media - Blair - Blaine (?).

  12. 12. (Q) Why does she not talk?

    1. This reaction, or refractory reaction in system, prevents the contraction in the muscular forces that have to do with the plexus from the secondary cardiac to the central nerve system.

  13. 13. (Q) Why does she wring her hands?

    1. Nervous reaction. When these come, there is some form of expression - and in the attempt to find an outlet for that INNATELY felt, the lack of knowing WHAT to do - see?

  14. 14. (Q) Will she ever be able to understand and carry out a spoken suggestion?

    1. She will, if these are carried out as has been outlined. In thirty to sixty days we would give those changes that have about; that is, after these are begun, see? Then we would carry on.

  15. 15. (Q) Should glandular treatment be continued?

    1. Overtaxing the heart without giving the proper reaction.

    2.

    3. 16. (Q) Where will the first improvement be noticed?

    4. The gradual relaxation, and NOT so nervous.

  16. 17. (Q) Is her brain alright, or just dormant?

    1. Just dormant.

  17. 18. (Q) Any other suggestion or advice regarding this body?

    1. There's plenty given here to be done! If we will do that in a consistent manner we will see results in this case. We are through for the present.

REPORTS OF READING 2253-1 F 8
R1. 3/24/31 Mrs. Pope witnessed a reading for another of her pupils, [5483].
R2. 4/6/31 A. M. Pope's letter to EC:

ROSEHILL SCHOOL CHESTER HEIGHTS, PA.

Dear Mr. Cayce,

It has been a wonderful revelation to me of the work the Spirit is doing through you and that you are fitted to do this and giving your life to it. I am so glad that I had the privilege and the opportunity to hear a reading. It "lifted me high above the pitfalls of my human destiny" and gave me a glimpse of this world as our Father would have it.

Mrs. [959] wrote that she would have another reading for [146] about the 18th. of May and I would be glad to have a check reading for [2253] on the same day if possible as she wants to be there. I will enclose check for ten dollars.

Dr. Kirk [Elisha T. Kirk, D.O.] is the only osteopath I could get in Media and I tried to find a Blair or Blane even in Philadelphia and could not. This man is giving [2253] the treatments as near as he can understand them and is much in sympathy with your work as he wrote to the doctors from the list you gave me and has had such satisfactory answers. I suppose he has already written to you. We do not understand this paragraph in [2253]'s reading "We would also add those vibrations, at least as the body rests, from the Radio-Active appliance, that [2253-1, Par. 6] make for coordination in the extremities of the system, plain battery charge should be used." I thought Dr. Kirk was giving these until I asked and found he did not understand what was to be given. Could you write me what is to be done?
With all best wishes to you and those associated with you, I am,
Sincerely, [signed] (Mrs.) Anne M. Pope
R3. 4/11/31 Dr. Kirk's letter: "[2253] seems to be responding slowly to treatment."
R4. 4/13/31 EC's letter to Mrs. Pope:

Mrs. A. M. Pope, Rosehill School, Chester Heights, Pa.
My dear Mrs. Pope: -

Many thanks for yours of the 6th. We are making the appointments for [2253] and [146] on the afternoon of Monday, May 18th, between the hours of 3: 00 and 5: 00 o'clock, Eastern Standard Time. If they are not here, it will be necessary - as you know - for us to have the exact location of each during the time set.

I have had some correspondence with Dr. Kirk. I believe you have the proper connection for the carrying out of the suggestions, and I am sure there will be results.

Regarding the Radio-Active Appliance - that is a little battery which has been made through directions given in the readings, and can of course only be obtained through these channels. We will be glad to have this made for you, and will be glad to send it to you so that you can have Dr. Kirk carry out the suggestions with it. This battery, however, may be applied at home - and I'm sure you could look after this much better than attempting to have the battery used in the doctor's office. Full instructions will be with it, as to how and when it should be applied. I feel that this will be a great help in the furtherance of the applications being made. I'm sure Dr. Kirk will be able to see definite results. I hope that you are already seeing some results with [2253].

We have been trying to get the materials together for the battery for [5483]. We didn't have any on hand, except at the hospital - and of course we couldn't use them. We have ordered the material needed, and should be able to send this in the near future. It will be very much better to have the treatments from THIS battery for [5483] under the Doctor's directions. All the directions will be sent to you and may be gone over by Dr. Kirk. I will write to him at the same time, giving full instructions as to how it is to be applied, what may be expected from it, and anything about it of which he should be warned.

Thanking you again for your letter, and trusting that we have been and may be of service to you, I am Sincerely, [EC: GD]

R5. 4/21/31 Mrs. Pope's letter to EC:

Rosehill School Chester Heights, Pa.
Dear Mr. Cayce,

In a letter from Mrs. [959] she wrote that she could not get to Virginia Beach until Tuesday the 19th. As I would like her to be there for [2253]'s and have it the same day that you give the reading for [146] will you arrange it for the same afternoon? Either on Monday or Tuesday the 18th or 19th. The children will be in their rooms, [2253] is here and [146] in his between 3 and five during the time of the reading of which ever afternoon it is to be.

I was delighted when Dr. Kirk told me that he was going to see you this week-end and I will give him the readings of [2253] and [5483] to take with him and he can ask you anything that he does not understand. He will have so much to ask you I am sure.
[146] seems to be improving and so is [2253]. Of course we cannot set a time limit on this treatment as there is no time or space in Spirit and what seems long to us may be only the twinkling of an eye. We will be patient and know that all things work together for good. We are grateful for the great privilege of knowing of this work.

May God bless you and all whom you love always is the wish of Yours sincerely, [signed] (Mrs.) Anne Pope

R6. 4/29/31 EC's letter to Mrs. Pope:

Mrs. A. M. Pope, Rosehill School Chester Heights, Penna. My dear Mrs. Pope: -

We have yours of the 21st, and we are changing to appointment for [2253]'s reading to the 19th so as to be in line with the one for [146].

Dr. Kirk was here Monday. We certainly enjoyed his visit very much indeed. He impressed me as being a sincere, whole-hearted individual, one not only capable but practical and sincerely desiring to be of aid and help to others. I feel very sure that you will have a wonderful assistant in Dr. Kirk.

The appliance has just been completed for Miss [5483], and we are expressing it directly to Dr. Kirk. I went over this matter with him, and I think he thoroughly understands the use of the appliance. She would have this treatment twice a week at his office. We will keep in touch with him from time to time, for I feel that we will have his hearty cooperation throughout.

I am certainly pleased to know that both you and Dr. Kirk are seeing improvement in [2253]'s condition. I have felt all along that [146] was improving. It IS hard for us to set a time limit, for we attempt to judge spiritual things with our little finite minds.

Hoping to hear from you from time to time, thanking you for your letter, and with kindest personal regards, I am Sincerely, [EC: GD]

R7. 4/30/31 Dr. Elisha T. Kirk's letter: "Mrs. Pope was in this afternoon with [2253] and she feels very much encouraged about the girl."

R8. 5/11/31 EC's letter to Mrs. Pope:

Mrs. A. M. Pope, Rosehill School Chester Heights, Penna.
Dear Mrs. Pope: -

Dr. Kirk reminded me in his letter of the 3rd that there was to be an appliance for [2253]. This has not been made for the reason that there has not been a suggestion from you that we have this made up. Possibly it would be well to wait now until after the check reading on the 19th, and see just whether it is necessary. Sincerely, [EC: GD]

(Physical Suggestion)

  1. 1. EC: Yes, we have the body here - this we have had before. We find with this body there has been rather the spasmodic reaction; that is, in days or for periods there apparently is a great deal of response to those applications made, then there will be periods when there seems to be a retraction, or same old conditions will arise.

  2. 2. In the addition of those vibrations as given, we would find this would become more of a uniform response, as it were, for the activity of this low form of electrical vibration that is created by the contacts to the extremities of the system tends to make for a quieting effect, and not from the sedentary forces of properties taken within - but more of a general nerve response to the changed vibrations created. Hence we would keep those conditions as HAS been outlined, ADDING those vibrations from the Radio-Active forces as HAS been outlined for the body, and we will find this nervousness, this tendency to retraction, will be CHANGED to a continued improvement, and we find there would be the responses to the manipulations, to the suggestions as would be well to be made as the body sinks to sleep - the talk, the quieting effect, the improvements through the psychopathic effect that may be created by suggestion as the body goes to sleep. Something as this, though it may be altered according to that one giving same. Do not make same as rote, or as just something to be said, but with that intense desire to be a channel of aid and help TO the individual:

  3. AS YOU (calling the child by ITS OWN name, that it responds to even by any

FORM of suggestion) AS YOU SINK INTO A QUIET RESTFUL SLEEP, THE ORGANS OF THE BODY WILL SO FUNCTION THAT THE VERY BEST WILL BE BUILDED IN THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL BEING, GIVING THAT RESPONSE THAT WILL BE A NORMAL ACTIVITY FOR THE ORGANS OF THE SENSORY SYSTEM.

  4. 4. And the response and reaction will be of a NORMAL physical action, not spasmodic, not any retractions - see? Give as POSITIVE suggestions. Ready for questions.

  5. 5. (Q) Should Mayblossom Bitters be continued?

    1. The dose may be reduced, but we would continue until there are no reactions through that wringing of hands, or of continued nervousness - picking at things.

  6. 6. (Q) How long should osteopathic treatments be kept up?

    1. We would take at least thirteen more before a period of rest is had; then rest for at least thirteen periods or days, then begin again, see, so that the body has the time - but we would make the SUGGESTIONS each evening.

  7. 7. (Q) Should they be the same as has been given - the osteopathic treatments?

    1. These have been very good, and in line with the suggestions - and we would keep them, for we have the proper cooperation here with the manipulator.

  8. 8. (Q) What noticeable improvements have been made since last reading?

    1. Periods of quietude, periods when there apparently is more attention given in ALL directions - whether in the vision or in the attempt to hear something, or to make sounds to others - see?

  9. 9. (Q) How long should the Radio-Active Appliance be used at a time, and how often?

    1. In the beginning we would give for thirty minutes each evening, as the body rests. This may produce a nervousness in the first one or two applications - but will the SUGGESTIONS, as has been given, be carried in a positive manner, this will soon pass and these will be MOST helpful in KEEPING an equilibrium. After three to ten days, gradually INCREASE until an hour is given, see? Make positive connections to opposite sides of body, right ankle - left wrist; right wrist, left ankle - see?

  10. 10. (Q) Any other suggestion?

    1. Do this at the present. We will find the responses will be more noticeable as these continue, for we are beginning in time.

  11. 11. (Q) How long should this treatment continue before another reading?

    1. From sixty to ninety days.

  12. 12. GC: That is all for the present.

  13. 13. We are through with these readings. [See 146-5, Par. 11-A which just preceded 2253-2.]

REPORTS OF READING 2253-2 F 8
R1. 5/30/31 EC's letter to Mrs. Pope:
Mrs. A. M. Pope, Rosehill School, Chester Heights, Penna.
My dear Mrs. Pope: -
I have your letter of the 27th, with enclosure, for which I thank you very, very much.
It is certainly a satisfaction to have one like Dr. Kirk to cooperate with us in the work. In keeping with this, I would like to tell you that we have recently had two other physicians in different parts of the country who have written beautiful letters stating that they are desirous of doing everything they can to follow out the readings, for they are seeing wonderful results coming to those whom they are treating in accordance with the information given in the readings.
I am sure Mrs. [959] is happy to have [146] under Dr. Kirk's care, and I'm certain he will improve in a satisfactory way and manner.
It is rather a wonderful idea that it might be possible for you to locate your school here, where we could all work together. I would like to be a channel of blessing to some of those unfortunate ones, to whom the world must be a very weary or dreary place, owing to their afflictions. It seems to me it would be a very easy matter to interest some of those who have expressed a desire to be of help in this department of the work, and I am sure it will work itself out. I just wish it were possible for you to be here on the 6th of June at our organization meeting, to present that phase of it to this new organization. Would that be at all possible? I'm sure Mrs. [...]'s [Mother of [5483]] connection in New York would be very helpful in getting this phase organized and started.
Thanks for your letter. I trust that you will see improvement right along with all those we are trying to help. May His blessings rest upon your efforts in this direction!
With kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, EC: GD

Rosehill School Chester Heights, Pa.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Your letter came this morning and I am so sorry that the battery went astray as I have not received it. I do hope it can be traced and that I will have it soon as I am sure that it will be very beneficial to [2253]. She must be improving but it is not very noticeable. It probably will take much time as she has been in this condition so long and we will have to be very patient. I am just hoping that her parents will be willing to go on with the treatment.
I do hope we will not be discouraged when we do not see immediate results as there is no or very little noticeable improvement in either [2253] or [146] either.
[146] is taking the treatments better than he did and that shows he is better in that way. He understands what we say better, too.
Hoping you and yours are well, I am,
Sincerely, [signed] Anne Pope

Rosehill School Chester Heights, Pa.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Would it be possible to have a reading, that is a check reading for [2253] at the same time that [146] has his? I know I am late in writing for it as Mrs. [959] wrote that she would like to have his around the 20th.
The children must be improving as strangers see improvement that we do not see. Our eyes must be dull.
The battery for [2253] has not come but I am sure that when we get it she will show marked improvement.
Hoping that everything is well with you and yours, I am, Sincerely, [signed] Anne Pope

Mrs. A. M. Pope, Rosehill School, Chester Heights, Penna.
Dear Mrs. Pope: -
As Mr. Cayce is away, we will not get check-readings until the afternoon of Tuesday, September 1st, between 3: 00 and 5: 00 o'clock Eastern Standard. If that will be satisfactory, send us the questions and we will get [2253]'s at the same time we do [146]'s. Let us know just where she will be at the time.
With kindest personal regards, I am
Sincerely, [signed] Gladys Davis Secretary to Mr. Cayce

R5. [No date] Mrs. Pope's note to GD [written at bottom of GD's letter, Par. 4 above]:
Dear Miss Davis, -
This is perfectly satisfactory and [2253] will be in her room on that afternoon between 3 & 5.
Pardon this hastily written answer.
Best wishes to you all from

(Physical Suggestion)

  1. 1. EC: We have the body here, [2253] - this we have had before.

  2. 2. (Q) Is the Mayblossom Bitters to be continued? If so, what dosage?

    1. We would continue same for the time being, at least until we have gained a more or a better control over the general nervous system of the body. This changed or altered in the manner in which it is combined will be of better application for the body, also. The dosage as we would give would be half a teaspoonful three times each day, preferably after meals.

  3. 3. (Q) Are the osteopathic treatments to be continued?

    1. They should be, for the better coordination of the body.

  4. 4. (Q) Is there anything we can do to get her to stop wringing her hands?

    1. Only applying those things that will alter the present nervous reactions in the system will change same. THIS body, would be well for the suggestions to be made under the influence of hypnosis, or auto-suggestion to the body as it sleeps. This must be made by someone in sympathy with the activities of the body, and THIS would relieve such stress on the general system.

  5. 5. (Q) Who would you suggest that could do this?

    1. Someone that's in sympathy, as has been given!

  6. 6. (Q) Is there anyone near present surroundings?

    1. We don't see 'em! We are not even looking for 'em! Do something for themselves, at least! We are through with these readings.

ROSEHILL SCHOOL CHESTER HEIGHTS, PA.
Dear Mr. Cayce,
Thank you so much for sending the readings so promptly and the battery for [2253]. I think she has improved noticeably and more so since she has had the battery although it has been used such a short time. I will enclose a check for the balance I owe you.
Will you thank Miss Davis for her nice letter and tell her that I did not want a copy of each reading for Dr. Kirk. I am sorry I did not mention it when I sent the questions. She had to do some of my thinking for me.
All three of her children [[5483], [2253] & [146]] are improving and we will be very interested to see how far they will go this next period.
Mrs. [959] wants to come up to see us if possible soon and we will be glad to talk over so many things with her.
Hoping you all are well and enjoying the wonderful weather our Father is giving us, I am, Sincerely, [signed] Anne Pope

R3. 10/1/31 Mrs. Pope's letter: "You will be glad to know that the children are improving in many ways. It is remarkable sometimes."

R4. 2/10/32 (Wednesday) Mrs. Pope's letter to EC:
Dear Mr. Cayce, -
For a long time I have been wanting to write to you but the rush still goes on and I do not seem to have time, I especially want to thank you for the Christmas Card which was much appreciated.
Of course I am still interested in you and your work. The children [[146] & [5483]] seem to improve but it is so slowly. We know that it is so whether we can see it or not. I just signed my name and address on the application as that is all you wanted me to do I assume.
Hoping you and all whom you love are well and happy, I am,
Sincerely, [signed] Anne M. Pope

R5. 2/16/32 EC's letter to Mrs. Pope:
Mrs. A. M. Pope, Rosehill School Chester Heights, Pa.
Dear Mrs. Pope: -
Many thanks for yours of recent date. We were very glad to have your form, indicating your interest in our undertaking. We are glad to welcome you among our membership.
The Association is to have its annual Congress between June 15th and July 1st, of the members. Won't it be possible for you to make arrangements to be with us during that time? In fact, might it not be arranged so you could make sort of an outing for those in your charge? I merely put out that as a suggestion. If you think well of it, we would attempt to make some sort of arrangements for taking care of them for the short while you might be here.
I'm sure the improvement seems very slow. However, that there is ANY improvement must be very gratifying, if we do not become too impatient. We realize that each individual has to go through, or work out, their OWN shortcomings and afflictions, and we - as agents or ambassadors OF the divine - merely assist wherever it is possible.
You must be kept quite busy. Know that we are always glad to hear from you. I understand from Mrs. [959] that you may bring [146] down sometime the early part of the Spring. If you do come this way, we would love very much to see and talk with you, if it is only for a few minutes.
Thanking you, and with love and good wishes from all, I am Sincerely, [EC: GD]

Time of Reading 4: 15 to 4: 30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., N.J.

  1. 1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which may be submitted, as I ask them:

  2. 2. EC: Yes, we have the body, [2014].

  3. 3. Now as we find, the disturbances are the incoordination between the IMPULSES and the activities through the cerebrospinal system.

  4. 4. These have passed through varied stages, but the causes arise from the incoordination between the cerebrospinal and the sympathetic systems, - arising from a lesion existent in the area of the lacteal and the umbilical plexus, which makes for contractions through the cords in the areas about the coccyx AND its associations and connections through the pineals.

  5. 5.Thus those contractions and reactions arise, from the incoordination of the activities.

  6. 6. As we find, this condition may be materially aided. It would require persistent and consistent applications, with the changes as will be necessary as conditions develop, - or as improvements arise.

  7. 7. First, we would have the administrations as would be made by William D. Taylor, see? in a neuropathic manner.

  8. 8. These, however, would be first administered at home.

  9. 9. Have heavy Castor Oil Packs applied each day for five days, leaving off for five days, then applying again five days, and so on. These would be applied at least an hour each day (when applied), over the lacteal duct or the area from the lower portion of the liver to the umbilical center, and extending to the caecum area on the right side.

  10. 10. Every day we would have the adjustments and manipulations, with special reference to the 9th dorsal; a pressure; and pressures upon the areas about the coccyx, with the relaxation of the abdominal area especially in the right side; coordinating these activities with those areas through the upper dorsal and throughout the cervicals.

  11. 11. Also each day for one hour, preferably as the body rests of an afternoon or when ready to retire, we would use the Radio-Active Appliance. The attachment plates would be kept very clean and polished, and would be circulated about the body in the regular order.

  12. 12. Then, be mindful of the diets, that these are kept well balanced with plenty of the iron and silicon foods, - such as whole wheat and steel cut oats.

  13. 13. Not too much of meats, but fish and fowl may be taken.

  14. 14. Use rather the easily digested foods.

  15. 15. Plenty of fruits and fresh vegetables, - not much of nuts or meats.

  16. 16. Do these, and be consistent with them for at least five to six weeks; then we would give further instructions.

  17. 17. Ready for questions.

  18. 18. (Q) Should the manipulations and the Oil Packs be begun at the same time?

    1. Be begun at the same time. As indicated, first call the Doctor, - or see the Doctor, see? and then begin these all at once. Give the Oil Packs five days, leave off five days, and keep this up for the six weeks.

  19. 19. We are through for the present.

(See directions [which were enclosed] for Castor Oil Packs.)

How can I control his coughing while he's eating, and he dribbles terribly while eating.

He is very stubborn and fresh and does not want to obey me, would you advise scolding him or hitting him he's so uncontrollable, or is it due to his ailment?

1. What is best to do for his stubborn constipation?
2. What can we do to reduce the ridged condition of his muscles on the right side?

Time of Reading 3: 40 to 3: 55 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., N.J.

  1. 1. HLC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions which have been submitted, as I ask them:

  2. 2. EC: Yes.

  3. 3. As we find, while there are not the outward appearances of a great deal of improvement, there ARE changes being evinced, - through the physical reactions as well as at times a great torment in the mental reactions.

  4. These indicate changes as may be wrought by the administering of those suggestions which have been indicated; that - as there is better coordination brought between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal system - there will be a much nearer normal reaction.

  5. 4. For some of those conditions which cause anxiety and disturbance, - namely, the poor eliminations, - we find that more of the lesions and tensions in the right side should be broken up, just below the liver and gall duct area, tending towards the caecum, and to that as will stimulate greater peristaltic movements.

  6. 5. We find that the administering of Russian White Oil or Usoline, and the taking of Senna Tea each evening, may be expected to, and will, give a better evacuation and elimination. Begin with about a teaspoonful of the Oil twice a day, - this may be gradually increased as is found necessary. As for the Senna Tea, - put about six to eight Senna 6. Leaves in a teacup of hot water and let steep for an hour or an hour and a half; then strain off and take the whole quantity.

  7. 7. To aid in stimulating the breaking up of the disturbances through this area indicated, as well as to aid in relaxing other portions of the body, we find that the application of the saturated solution of Epsom Salts in Packs will be most beneficial. These should be applied for at least twenty to thirty minutes, and then a full gentle massage over the area with Olive Oil; then sponging off in lukewarm water.

  8. 8. The rest of the applications we would keep in much the same outline as we have indicated.

  9. 9. Ready for questions.

  10. 10. (Q) Should he be waked earlier in the morning, so as to make it easier for him to eliminate?

    1. It would be more beneficial, if there is not too much of antagonism encountered by such. It is better to have a regular routine for the body, in EVERY way.

  11. 11. (Q) How can his coughing while eating be controlled?
This will necessarily have to be the result, or the effect of the other applications, and by suggestion.

  12. 12. (Q) Would you advise scolding or hitting him, when he is so uncontrollable? or what method would you advise?

    1. Patience, kindness, gentleness, ever; not in that of scolding or tormenting at all. But in cajoling, and in kindness and in patience, these are the manners.

Remember, these conditions are for purposes. While they become very trying to the individuals who attempt to administer to the needs of the body, know that these are purposeful in thine own experience also.

  13. 13. (Q) Is this stubborn, fresh and disobedient attitude due to his ailment?

    1. Due to the ailment; else there would be other measures indicated. And in the building up of the body, there must be the response to kindness and gentleness and love, - more than to force, power, might, hate or scolding.

      Do that.

  14. 14. We are through with this Reading.

Dear Dr. Taylor;-

Just sent the information as gotten for [2014] on to his Mother. Sincerely hope the suggestions will help out - am sure this is a very hard case to handle but do hope with cooperation on the part of the family we can be of real help.

Know you are glad to be kept busy - as that is giving an outlet for the real purposes of life. We have been busy for last few weeks and hope we can keep it up right along. Am planning some time after the first of the year to spend a few days in N.Y. Hope to see you at that time and talk over with you about Va. My would be fine to have you near us here, but just whether it would be best or not don't know. Will talk about that. Glad to know you have your license for the state, that is fine.

Remember me to all who care to hear.

R E A D I N G

Time of Reading 10: 55 to 11: 10 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., N.J.

  1. 1. HLC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them, regarding his condition:

  2. 2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [2014]; this we have had before.

  3. 3. As we find, there are decided improvements in some respects. While there are a great many reactions, still, that are not satisfactory, we find the ability of coordinating activities - the voluntary as well as involuntary - shows much greater improvement than we have had before.

  4. 4. There are improvements also in the coordination of the attempts of the body to function in a coordinant manner; the impulses between the sympathetic and the central or cerebrospinal show some improvement.

  5. 5. To be sure, much is yet to be desired respecting the involuntary activities of some of the functionings, especially in the sympathetics as related to the sensory system; or as to the face, the mouth, the salivary gland reaction, to the conditions in the assimilating system.

  6. 6. Then, as we find, these are the needed conditions, the principles, in the present.

  7. 7. There has not been as yet a full removal of the adhesions in the right portion of the abdominal area, or about the lacteals and the umbilical plexus; and extending to the activity in the caecum, with the drainages through the colon area.

  8. 8. Those same applications indicated, then, need to be kept; and then the massaging and those activities to aid same. We will find that the general massage here will aid in breaking up the lesions and also enable the nerve forces through the system to coordinate better; and then gradually produce a better building of coordination between the sympathetics, the vegetative nerve system and the cerebrospinal system, especially in the areas from the coccyx to the 9th dorsal. These areas need some stimulations.

  9. 9. We would keep, then, those activities; and these - with the general precautions should bring the continued improvements.

  10. 10. To be sure, these may be slow, but they are sure.

  11. 11. Then, keep the mental attitudes about the body of a helpful, creative influence; the trusting within the ability of creative energies to function through the body itself. This is necessary.

  12. 12. Do that.

  13. 13. Ready for questions.

  14. 14. (Q) What is the reason for, and what can be done for the habit reaction he has; such as the spitting, drawing of the mouth down, and waving of the fingers before his nose and mouth?

    1. These, as indicated, are reflexes through the sensory nerve system; lack of coordination between impulses and the guided or directed forces in the mental reactions of same. Keep up the applications indicated for corrections, making the suggestions - and not attempting to control by violent means!

  15. 15. (Q) What type of suggestion would you recommend?

    1. As just indicated, the type that is to be given continually; of the creative forces or God, - love manifesting through the activities of the body. These as helpful forces will bring the bettered conditions for this body.

  16. 16. (Q) Will the White Light be helpful?

    1. The White Light will be helpful more when there are better coordinations between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal, or when the lesions and adhesions are broken up. For as the functioning of the White Light is to be with the impulses through the nerve and muscular forces, these should be guided or directed through their proper channels when these administrations are given - for the better results.

  17. 17. (Q) While eating he seems to go in sort of an absent-minded state. What can be done for this?

    1. This again is the lack of coordination between the impulses, and the activities of the functionings of the system. This is a natural condition in the general animal kingdom, as would be seen by the study of same; and the variation between man and such is to CONTROL impulses rather than allowing the impulses to control the activities of the nervous system!

These, then, will be stimulated by making coordinations between the 9th dorsal plexus, you see, and the 2nd and 3rd dorsal center; that is, these as pressures, you see, first one and then the other; for these will change the impulses arising from the nervous system to the muscular reaction of the digestive forces, as well as the assimilating influences through the body.

  18. 18. (Q) How often should the treatments be given?

    1. About three times a week.

  19. 19. (Q) How often should the Castor Oil Packs be given?

    1. These should be given at intervals of at least three days, until there is no indication of any adhesion through this area. This can be determined by the pressures upon the area over the lacteal duct and umbilical center where they join just below the gall duct emptying into the system, see? and that upon the nerve center just below to the LEFT side of the end of the spine.

Give these Packs three days in succession, you see; then rest three to five days; then give again for three days in succession; and so on.

  20. 20. (Q) Can anything be done at present to improve the leg, or walking?

    1. This as we find must be the result of the general improvement of the whole system. This will be GREATLY improved as applications in general are made for stimulating the circulation.

Do not lose patience with self nor with others. Keep the attitude of helpfulness. Know that conditions that exist, while from the purely material may be trying, they are that needed for thine own - and for [2014]'s - soul development!

Be patient, for in patience ye possess thine own soul!

R E A D I N G

Time of Reading 7th St., 4: 00 to 4: 10 P. M. Eastern
Standard Time. ..., N.J.

  1. 1. HLC: You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for further corrective measures; answering the questions, as I ask them:

  2. 2. EC: Yes - 7th - we have the body here, [2014].

  3. 3. As we find, in some respects there are improvements; in others there are more flusterations that occur at times more often.

  4. 4. WE would continue with ALL those suggestions given here for the better improvement of this coordination between those activities of the sympathetic with the cerebrospinal impulses.

  5. 5. While the frustrations arise more from external or environmental forces than from that within the body, these may become more serious unless there are more sympathetic conditions indicated in the surroundings. Hence changes in this direction may be necessary.

  6. 6. Ready for questions.

  7. 7. (Q) Would a change of living environment be good in this case?

    1. Just read what has been given!

  8. 8. (Q) Would you suggest a place where he might be taken care of that would be helpful to him?

    1. This would require rather that many conditions be considered. But we would search out a place. There are those not so far distant that are worth considering. But those that are responsible should be rather satisfied, not from self but from a COORDINATED activity as to that supplied there, and the needs of the body.

  9. 9. (Q) What treatment will be helpful to keep him from drooling and holding his mouth open?

    1. As has been indicated, - we would not here change much of that as we have indicated - in the present.

  10. 10. (Q) Is the institution at Vineland, N.J., a place that would be helpful?

    1. If there is the UNDERSTANDING of those that would have charge, and if there is the cooperation with the suggestions as we have given, or the allowing of these to be administered, it would be a good institution.

  11. 11. (Q) Would it be advisable for his parents to move into the country with him?

    1. This would be MOST advisable.

  12. 12. (Q) Any other suggestions for the body at this time?

    1. Be patient and be persistent with this body. Show affection, and those activities that will work - or those activities that are worthy of that hoped to be meted to self; and it will be worth while.

  13. 13.We are through with this Reading.

Vanessa: Sojourn with an Autistic Child, By Lynn Rogers

Venture Inward, September/October 1994

*(Lynn Rogers, a writer, lecturer, teacher, and intuitive counselor, is an A.R.E. member living in San Jose, California. She is a graduate of Atlantic University, and can be contacted at (408) 559- 5995.)

Then as to the sorrow, which is to be a portion of thy present experience, accept it, not reject it, nor attempt to put it [the child] away. Be gentle, be kind, be patient, be long-suffering, and it will bring greater joy, greater harmony within thy experience. [5284-1]

When I first learned that my bright-eyed, beautiful, two-year-old daughter was neurologically impaired, I went through the typical steps of grieving: shock, denial, bargaining, anger, and finally acceptance. Fortunately, even as a young mother, I knew about the Edgar Cayce philosophy - that nothing happens by chance, that souls live more than one life, that this was not Vanessa's whole self.

Still, that knowledge didn't keep me from an almost overwhelming pain as I gradually faced the fact that my angelic-looking, "perfect" child was impaired for life. At five months, she'd tried to talk. She'd crawled, but on her back, and at thirteen months, she tried to walk, only to fall, over and over, often hitting her head.

I had to face facts at 22 months. She'd stopped walking and fell even when crawling. The early attempts at speech had ceased. I had a dream to take her to an osteopath or a neurologist, who said, "There's something very wrong with this baby." I didn't want to believe it. She's always given the impression that she has glimmers of brilliance mixed with a much more limited mental awareness.

I'd just given birth to her sister and spent the first two weeks of Megan's life nursing her in the waiting room of the hospital where Vanessa lay. I prayed that Vanessa would be healed. She suddenly picked herself up and began to walk. Again I wanted to believe she was normal. But at home she regressed, banged her head, cried, and stopped walking.

The first time I heard the word "autistic" used to describe my daughter Vanessa, she was four years old. Although one psychologist then suspected she was autistic, other diagnoses were offered, including ataxia, aphasia, and dyslexia. And I was told that autistic children walked on their tip toes and never looked at you. That didn't fit Vanessa. At four, she got speech therapy at a school for the aphasia, but it wasn't enough; by six years she was in a behavior modification program for the autistic, as well.

When autism, a severe lifelong disability affecting speech, mental development, and perception of sensations and people, was first identified by Leo Kanner in 1949's post-Freudian era, parents were wrongly blamed - "refrigerator mothers." It has now been firmly proven that parenting style has nothing to do with the origin of autism.

Current medical science has established autism as a neurological disorder that appears in the first three years of life. It is more common than blindness and is found in four times more males than females in families of all racial, ethnic and social backgrounds throughout the world. Eighty percent of autistic persons are developmentally delayed, though many have distinct "savant" skills in areas like music, mathematics, spatial concepts, and, I have discovered, heightened psychic awareness.

It is often mis-diagnosed, at first. Although no one was exactly sure what was wrong with Vanessa, over time we learned she did better in an autistic program. At first, we still suffered from the old approach to this disorder. For example, the children's father and I were made to sit on the floor in a glass viewing room with our two little daughters, as unseen eyes watched our every move.

If Vanessa banged her head at home, one social worker at the speech school made us track Vanessa's every move on a huge piece of butcher paper hung on our kitchen wall - until she hurt herself badly in their care. This experience gave us further clues as to Vanessa's condition, because we later learned that self-injurious, repetitive, aggressive behavior is a symptom of autism.

When she was in the behavior modification program, we carried a timer. A bell rang every 15 minutes. We had to give Vanessa a food reward if she hadn't banged her head.

It was no comfort to hear that the divorce rate of young, first-time parents of such a child was over 80 percent.

By the time she was six, Vanessa's father and I separated. Other family members on both sides couldn't cope, either. I felt abandoned, except by one person, Jessica Madigan, an early West Coast A.R.E. organizer, lecturer, and writer, who had introduced me to the Cayce philosophy.

"Don't put Vanessa aside," she advised me, when others were urging me to give her up. "Vanessa is an old soul, retarded in this one life, for a purpose."

Again and again, whenever I felt overwhelmed, ready to drive off the Golden Gate Bridge with Vanessa - I didn't plan to do it, it just made me feel much better to think there was a way out - I would remember her words.

"The retarded person may have been over-proud of intellect in a previous life. In Greece and China, to save face, they exposed such babies on the hills to die, or Vanessa may have had supreme intellect in Atlantis, doubting that the humanoids had souls. It's karma for her and for you. If you don't work it through this time, you'll have to meet this in another life."

About this time I had a "vision" in meditation. I was taken back to the night of Vanessa's conception.

Vanessa, as a beautiful soul entity, came to me as I slept. I was told I didn't have to be her mother in this life. It was a choice. But, if I didn't choose her now, I myself would be more severely mentally handicapped in a future life - but one of great advancement, when love and care would be given in something like a healing temple. Out of love, I chose her.

I've since discovered that Vanessa, in a recent life, may have been the mother of an actress who died early, partly because Vanessa did not believe in doctors.

But none of this explains my own karma. Jessica helped me to discover the key past life that brought our tie into being. I wanted to discover a past life that I could research. Jessica said, "If you sincerely desire to understand your present karmic pattern, pray about it, it may take a year, but your prayers will be answered."

Several months later, I began to dream a series of past-life clues that led me to several researchable lifetimes, and one that explained my karma as Vanessa's mother today. In this past life, I was 17 and an aspiring writer, when I met a roguish poet. I became pregnant. He abandoned us. I had a normal, bright- eyed daughter. We lived with my stepsister, until I sent the child with a nurse to her father in hopes he would reconcile with me. He didn't, but he never let me see the child again. Soon tiring of her, he abandoned her to a convent where she died alone at age five.

In this life, now, I was a young mother burdened with an autistic, developmentally-delayed child, in grim circumstances, learning to put her welfare before my own. Gradually, a karmic stumbling block - my own desire to escape this responsibility - became a stepping stone. In the words of Catholic theologian Matthew Fox, I had journeyed from the Via Positiva, the path of joy at Vanessa's birth, to Via Negativa, the darkest night of the soul, when her disability became known. And now I was moving toward Via Creativa, where new insight comes from the depths, and ultimately toward Via Transformativa, where this insight is taken out into the world to help others. Fox's Creation Spirituality and Edgar Cayce's philosophy - know thyself and give loving service - are not too far apart in my book.

When I truly came to care for Vanessa's suffering more than my own selfish desires, grace entered in.

First, at Jessica's suggestion, I took Vanessa at age six to Dr. Gladys McGarey, who was then at the A.R.E. Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. She explained that Vanessa's soul wasn't fully "tucked in" her body. Her implementation of the Edgar Cayce healing tools stopped Vanessa's screaming at night and brought greater coordination.

I took Vanessa to Dr. Gladys again when she was 13 and could read no alphabet letters at all. She spoke in short repetitive phrases - "Gimme treat." After two weeks of osteopathic manipulation, massage, music, energy medicine, patterning for the brain injured, nutritional intervention, and love, she began to recognize a few whole words that the clinic staff wrote on huge flash cards - a major breakthrough.

Dr. Gladys explained that brain-injured people don't process information like those considered "normal." They might be hypo- or hyper-sensory, or both, like Vanessa. I understood then why Vanessa took off her clothes at times - because they felt heavy, like a suit of armor. At other times Vanessa could have a third-degree burn and barely notice.

"The organism is always trying to heal itself," Dr. Gladys said. So Vanessa was banging her head in a misdirected attempt to heal, to get the message of touch to her brain. We could intervene and build new pathways.

Returning home via Los Angeles with my new husband Joe, an older man I had met through Jessica, who was devoted to Vanessa's care, we stopped to see Jessica. Near death after a severe stroke, she couldn't speak. It was the last time I ever saw her.

After our visit, we visited with Jessica's co-worker. He asked Vanessa, "Did you like the clinic?"

We couldn't explain to him that Vanessa, with a functional I.Q. just below 50, wouldn't understand his question. But she looked clearly into his eyes and answered, "Yes. It helped my soul." It was a wonderful moment for us all.

We continued the A.R.E. Clinic's home program, with the help of volunteers, for six months intensively, then requested it be integrated into her day school dealing with autism and emotional problems.

For example, as often as possible, Vanessa's forearms were gently scrubbed to give her brain the message of touch. Self-injurious behavior decreased. She began to read whole survival words on smaller flash cards- "walk, stop, women's." Today, at Morgan Center School, she associates pictures and words if related to her life. "Today we went swimming and had ice cream."

She was better able to express her feelings, but still had cycles of withdrawal contrasted with flurries of repetitive speech, strange habits like picking lint off a stranger's clothing, turning off all the lights in the house and biting her arms. She needed a structured living program.

Now Vanessa resides during the week at Spark Foundation, a grassroots, parent-founded residential treatment program, an alternative to state hospitalization in our community. Founded by three mothers of autistic sons - one Jewish, one Catholic, one Protestant - it serves young people of diverse social, ethnic and racial backgrounds. Spark takes a positive skills training approach, focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses in a safe, homelike atmosphere where the essential dignity of each person is respected.

From these parents' research, I learned there is a broad spectrum of autistic symptoms including perseveration (repetition) of words or behavior. Because of inner neurological chaos, autistic persons develop rituals to organize their environment. Some were more sociable than others. Now I knew for sure Vanessa was autistic.

At Spark, Vanessa shares activities with other autistic youths, including skills training-like salad making-and recreational activities like therapeutic dancing and swimming. Although autism is a lifelong disability, autistic people do continue to make progress, even into adulthood. Next year she'll begin a sheltered vocational workshop.

Our whole family helps keep Spark alive. I've done fund-raising and community outreach, Joe serves on the board, Vanessa's 19-year-old sister Megan volunteers in the office, and my father edges her group home lawn and golfs at the benefit tournament. The Center for Infinite Growth church in Santa Clara has opened their hearts to Vanessa and supports all these efforts. Our dark night of the soul and karmic stumbling block, as Edgar Cayce might have said, has become a stepping stone to the Via Transformativa as we join with other dedicated parents and professional staff to provide a program now regarded in California as a new approach to autism. Dr. Gladys McGarey serves on Spark's advisory board.

My life has come full circle. There was one other dream that sums it all up.

After Vanessa had been conceived, I'd been hospitalized and medicated for pernicious vomiting, and I worried that something might be wrong with the child I was carrying. Looking for work in California, we were staying with another young couple. The woman couldn't have a child. One night I dreamed that I saw a statue of Mother Mary holding Christ crucified. I later learned it was the Pieta. In my dream, the left side of the white statue body of Christ had been chipped away.

I woke up, increasingly worried that there was something wrong with my

child to be. I told my friend, she said, "It's just anxiety."

Two days later she came screaming into my room with the morning paper. "You won't believe this - the night you had that dream about the statue of Mother Mary, a man broke into the Vatican, went to the statue of the Pieta and hacked away the left side of the body of Jesus Christ with a hammer."

That dream was superconscious in many respects, emblematic of the sense of inner crucifixion the parent of a handicapped child will always feel. And yet, there is a resurrection, especially if we take the timeless view offered in the Cayce readings, that life, as my dear friend Jessica so often said, is purposeful, continuous, and that we can't judge the light of a soul by its physical or karmic condition. Vanessa may be what Cayce would call an Arcturian soul, near graduation from this plane. Though she will never fly to college in France or attend A.R.E. Youth Congress as Megan has done, I've learned greatly through caring for her and from her unique, fresh, approach to life. She loves unconditionally, and can break from the frustration of her condition into a radiant smile, joyous just to see the face of a friend.

She is highly intuitive and reads the essence of people. For example, she knows ahead of time when someone will drop in unexpectedly to visit. "Where's Rob?" she repeats for an hour before he arrives, unannounced. If people who otherwise love each other argue fiercely over inconsequentials, Vanessa laughs. But if someone rejects Vanessa behind a superficial smile, she becomes extremely agitated.

Once I dropped in at her group home on a day when I had experienced a sad personal loss. I masked my feelings and the staff didn't notice I was ready to cry. But Vanessa and three of her roommates who are usually in their own autistic worlds, all stopped their perseverative behavior and came quietly toward me in the living room. One girl who almost never makes eye contact - she says "pizza, pizza, pizza" when I visit - touched my shoulder and faced me with eyes full of compassion. I've come to believe that although autistic and developmentally delayed people don't have all of their cognitive abilities, their soul, or intuitive force is very strong.

When I recently received a phone call from Vanessa's teacher Clare, I was afraid it was bad news, as Vanessa had been in one of her down cycles for weeks. "Vanessa clicked today," Clare said. She had run the 100yard dash with people preparing for the Special Olympics, and in the class had read two pages from a book, The Grumpy Elephant.

I couldn't believe it. Vanessa's never read a book in her life. She got stuck once, her teacher reported.

"What does "o-w" spell? Clare asked Vanessa.

"Ow," she answered correctly. "Vanessa," Clare exclaimed. "You can read!"

"Yes," my daughter answered, with a great big smile.

Vanessa delights in simple things. She tries harder than anyone I've ever known, making so much of so little. While other young adults worry about the right clothes and college choices, Vanessa kisses her Miss Piggy doll's nose and sorts the same memory cards over and over, studying each picture as if it were new.

When Megan's friends, home on college break, rush past Vanessa to chat with Megan in her room, Vanessa beams and repeats, "I saw Megan's friends," long after they have all left her behind to go out.

She forgives those who lose patience with her and doesn't envy her sister's abilities. She is, in the definition of Creation Spirituality, a true mystic, or, in the philosophy of Edgar Cayce, an old soul.

She is my greatest teacher.

Memoirs of an Autistic Child, by John Chambers

Venture Inward, January/February 1996

An autistic child of genius has provided what seems to be striking testimony of the power of past lives to mold this present life, and to create conditions such as autism.

When Eve was one year old, her mother left her with grandparents for seven weeks to accompany her husband on a business trip to Thailand. When she returned, Eve was gone from her. The child had become autistic. Brigitte Hanf writes, "The October day was brilliant. In a red wool sweater [Eve] sat in a pile of colored leaves turning one leaf in her fingers, over and over. Her eyes were vacant."

For 13 years Eve apparently did nothing - neither speaking, learning, nor clothing herself. When she was eight, on the urging of psychiatrist/ neurologist Martha Welch, her mother tried "holding therapy," clasping Eve in her arms around the clock for two years in an effort to rebuild the shattered bond between mother and child.

One day, in a fit of rage, Brigitte seized her daughter's hand and insisted that she write - anything. In large, sprawling letters, the 14-year-old wrote, "Eve." Thus began an eight-year period filled with sorrow but also marvels. Not only did Eve continue to write, though always with her mother's hand on hers, but - in poetic language sprinkled with foreign words - she described her own richly evocative inner life. She transcribed memories from the womb and of other lives, and conversations overheard in her earliest years as Eve (these latter would be verified to the word). She revealed that she had taught herself to read at four and that her tastes ran to Mann and Dostoevsky.

Astonishingly, she revealed that she had been in a telepathic link-up with her mother from her birth. When Eve's mother left her a second time, to travel to Germany to visit Brigitte's dying father, Eve, now in her mid-teens, was able afterwards to describe in writing every detail of that visit - which the child had made as a kind of telepathic observer.

Brigitte Hanf told about Eve at a conference of the association for the Treatment and Research of Experienced Anomalous Trauma (TREAT V), in 1993. Her daughter, in private school, still does not speak, and at home still only writes with the facilitated communication of her mother's hand. Facilitated Communication, introduced only in the 1980s, is providing a voice for thousands of children and young adults with autism or other disorders of communication.

Eve's intrauterine memories seem to provide startling confirmation that the unborn child is conscious, remembers, and is richly sentient. In poetic language sprinkled with words of her own making, Eve told her mother she remembered the fetal monitor that preceded her birth by Cesarean section: "A dangerous wondering eager and looking machine sees wooden heart beat but not feelings of child - searing fear - I remember some wiggly movements of eerie ... enveloping water. It felt decidedly eerie ... I felt so alone."

The child revealed her reluctance to be born: "I didn't want to be born because I didn't do decisive things easily." Equally striking, she explained, apparently, the roots of her own autism: "When scholarly doctors' words describe about autism they are full of dopey garbage. What causes autism is sorrowful soon after birth or during birth despair ...tons of [expletive] specialists ... I was so mad at the woolly headed sordid simpletons who said I was retarded. Some of them saw through my act ... who do they think they are? I feel born stuck now."

Eve's mother told TREAT Conference participants that as early as 1985 Eve was writing of past lives. "I am choosing separate lives wending so I can censor past inequalities. They were segregating you and me One life made dead you and I wanted a new chance with you. One life waned before I sensed I was willing to experience it. One life west endured when I wanted east. I was yearning to be words saying wishing to you yell with desire but I was only English and you were Japanese."

In a disclosure that eerily mirrored the findings of Dutch past-life regressionist Tineke Noordegraaf Eve's mother recounted how, during a "period of intense disturbance fraught with seizures," Eve described her previous existence in a concentration camp. She had been caught while trying to escape with her half-starved brother on her back, and was thrown into a gas oven onto a heap of burning bodies.

In her isolation, Eve seemed to access sources of wisdom that normal people can scarcely know. To her mother she wrote:

"To mollify the world must one play host to its saneless, lost soul- massacring mores, or taste the adverse - the fight to loosen oneself from its welding wrought wretched safety? I am for the desolation of silence at the expense of feasts and friends, taking festive isolation over solitary festivity.

"I am a different direction from you. I am a didactic early born specimen of some new deeply developmental stage in badly wrong Homo sapiens "

If Eve's utterances - always handwritten, and always with the aid of Facilitated Communication - were almost always strange and beautiful, and often heart-wrenching, none were more so than her revelations of her constant telepathic bond with her mother. Brigitte was deeply troubled to learn that many of Eve's reactions - seizures, bedwetting, etc. - were in response to her mother's own unspoken fears and anxieties. Eve wrote, "I can't help it I often taste yonder your words afar wrong I dug in when you hyper doddering thoughts have ESP droops me."

Eve did not have to be near her mother to be able to communicate telepathically. She was able to describe, with poetic insight, her mother's impressions and reactions while she was visiting Brigitte's dying father several thousand miles away. For example:

"In the following hours the women freshened up under the auspices of a friend who was herself in hospital but offered her house to them, though they slept in my grandfather's apartment. There they found why his years of wrong living were hidden behind words of false hope. Homing back to his native land after long exile, he had blanketed his blanked life by means of prescription drugs the empty bottles were littered everywhere."

And, much later: "Again I heard the women's words once more at my grandfather's bedside. I was hearing their wanting to help him to speak final words of wide opening to himself, but the words wouldn't come. I saw his life waning fast, freeing him from his weak body. The women at his bed saw it too. My mother leaned over to feel for his hand and put warm love into the touch. Her words of love drowned in his bogged heart. I got the impatient words, hand- waving my mother away. I saw the women go. Wending their way out of the building they walked out into light and warmth."

Eve's mother confirmed that all had happened exactly as Eve had recorded it, down to the last detail. At the TREAT Conference, she drew this conclusion:

"The child with autism, and some others, for some reason genetic or otherwise, has retained his original vulnerability. Because he is so fearfully unable to layer himself with the protective clothing of acceptable social mores, his only alternative must be self-isolation.

"As for the rest of us, it is time to recognize how far we have gone to the other extreme in our denial of what we choose to call the paranormal. The overwhelming evidence of the existence of these faculties must serve to direct us back to center, there to balance our hubris with humility."

Suggestive Therapeutics

Suggestive therapeutics is a naturalistic form of hypnosis utilized by caregivers during physical treatments and during the early stages of sleep. The idea is that certain physical therapies, such as massage, electrotherapy and manual therapy can induce hypnotic trance. Edgar Cayce recommended that this natural trance state be used as a means of stimulating healing and addressing behavioral issues. The first few minutes of sleep (the hypnogogic period) offers a similar trance state where the unconscious mind is open to suggestion.

Because this technique utilizes trance states which are commonly associated with various physical therapies and sleep, the person providing the suggestions does not necessarily need to be a mental health professional trained in hypnosis. In other words, suggestive therapeutics allows one to bypass training in learning formal hypnotic induction techniques.

The content of the hypnotic suggestions should always be positive. It is also important that the suggestions be relevant to the person's particular problems (whether physical disease, behavioral problems, etc.).

Persons wishing to use this intervention should list some areas of concern and find ways of addressing these problems in a positive, affirmative manner. If physical healing is involved, you may wish to work with your physician or health care professional in forming these suggestions. In fact, health care professionals should be familiar with these techniques so as to apply them during therapy.

Suggestive Therapeutics - Natural Hypnosis

True Health, February 2002

We are all familiar with the image of the stage hypnotist saying "Your eyelids are getting heavy" as the pocket watch is swung in front of the face of the subject. To be sure, this is a somewhat dated form of hypnotic induction. Due to the ground breaking work of hypnotherapists such as Milton Erickson, hypnosis has become a much more sophisticated and subtle art. Erickson, a psychiatrist whose reputation grew in prominence during the late twentieth century, was also influential in encouraging the use of hypnosis for healing.

One of the Erickson's major breakthroughs was the insight that we all go into altered states of consciousness naturally during each day - the common everyday trance. His power of observation enabled him to recognize common interactions that induce trance. For example, he noticed that convoluted sentences that caused confusion can lead to trance. (No wonder I am so entranced by the Cayce readings!) Erickson also became famous for the "handshake induction" whereby a prolonged squeezing of the hand can be utilized to induce trance. Repetitive movements (such as massage) can also induce trance, a point that we will return to later.

Erickson also found that it was natural for him to go into trance during a hypnotherapy session. He trusted his unconsciousness mind to guide the process. In a sense, Erickson attained a high level of attunement during sessions, although he steadfastly denied that his process was psychic. To him it was all a natural ability of consciousness. The key point here is that Erickson's use of "natural hypnosis" stands in contrast to the "formal hypnosis" used by early stage hypnotists.

If I come across as impressed by Erickson and his approach, chalk it up to my experience in graduate school where most of my professors were practicing Ericksonians. Every class was an adventure! It definitely surpassed my undergraduate psychology education that focused mostly on rats in Skinner boxes!

Suggestive Therapeutics

As revolutionary as Erickson's innovations were, he was not the first to recognize the therapeutic potential of natural hypnosis. During the early decades of the twentieth century, medical hypnosis was sometimes called suggestive therapeutics to distinguish it from stage hypnosis. The earliest historical reference I have found for suggestive therapeutics is in a work written by a physician in 1909. In its initial form, it appeared to be primarily formal hypnosis used by health practitioners.

Cayce's Perspective Edgar Cayce recommended suggestive therapeutics in many readings. The fascinating part is that he utilized natural activities to induce trance years before Erickson formulated his ideas about natural hypnosis.

As presented in the Cayce readings, suggestive therapeutics is a naturalistic form of hypnosis utilized by caregivers and health practitioners. The idea is that certain physical therapies, such as massage, electrotherapy, and spinal manipulation can induce hypnotic trance. Edgar Cayce recommended that this natural trance state be used as a means of stimulating healing and addressing behavioral issues. The first few minutes of sleep offers a similar trance state where the unconscious mind is open to suggestion. This has been termed "presleep suggestion" by some practitioners. Because this technique utilizes trance states commonly associated with physical therapies and sleep, the person providing the suggestions does not necessarily need to be a mental health professional trained in hypnosis.

Child Behavior Problems

Cayce typically recommended suggestive therapeutics for childhood behavioral problems such as thumb-sucking and bedwetting. I have also found it effective for simple anxiety-related problems. Case in point - when my daughter started school and was afraid that she would get gobbled up by the big yellow school bus, some simple presleep suggestions solved the problem. A few years later, the dreaded spelling quizzes became so traumatic that she didn't want to go to school on Fridays. Although I started out with presleep suggestions in person, I soon found that just recording the spelling list with some positive suggestions was all that was needed. I talked to her about how she would feel while taking the tests and the good grades that she would get. Almost immediately, the anxiety decreased dramatically and within two weeks the problem was gone for good.

A gentle spinal massage with cocoa butter is another common Cayce recommendation for inducing trance in children. Most children like getting a backrub while being told positive things by a parent or loved one.

Cayce Quotes On Suggestive Therapeutics

Here are some excerpts from the Cayce readings which illustrate the concept of suggestive therapeutics:

The treatments also that should be included by the same attendant, or the same one with the body, would be -- when the body is put or is ready to go to rest of evening - to massage gently but thoroughly all along the whole cerebrospinal system, and during such periods (for most often we would find the body would gradually fall into that state of near between the waking and sleeping state) make gentle suggestions that quiet, rest, peace, happiness, joy, developments in every manner that are constructive physically and mentally, will come to the body through its rest period! Or, the suggestion to the deeper portion of the subconscious forces of the body. (271-1)

However, for these suggestions to be more effective, they should not be given in merely a singsong manner; nor said just once. But take at least the time to repeat same (the suggestion), positively, three to five times; that there may be the full response in the positive forces of the suggestion to the mental activities of the body.

And we would, for the time being, use the same suggestion; or the same affirmation. And by affirmation we mean that it should be an affirmation! (271-4)

As to the suggestions that should be given, - when there are the administrations of ANY of the influences for aid, whether the rubs or the packs or what not, the suggestions should be of a very positive nature, yet very gentle, and in a constructive way and manner; expressing hope always that there is a creating, through the hope, the expectancy for certain activities to the body that it desires to do, - much in the manner as would be given to a child in its promptings for an aid to itself.

And, let the suggestions be constructive in the spiritual sense, when the manipulations or adjustments are given, as well as when there are the periods of the rubs and other applications. These would be well in this manner, though each individual should construct same in his or her own words: 'Let there be accomplished through the desires of this body, mentally and physically, that which will enable the body to give the better, the truer, the more real expression of its own self; as well as that in which the entity or body may influence itself in relationships to others for greater physical, mental and spiritual attitudes towards conditions.

Then, let the desire of the body through ALL its activities in the present be of a spiritual nature ...

Q. Should suggestions be made by BOTH the Doctor and those taking care of her?

A. Just as indicated, these should be made whenever any applications are made, - whether for the rubs, the adjustments, or the packs. The BODY desires attention, - but in a manner in which there are, as indicated, the suggestions that it is to become not so reliant upon others, but so - because of the very nature of the applications -- that it may do more and more for itself.

Whenever there is the suggestion, it should be not as 'There WON'T be,' but 'You WILL do so and so,' see?

Q. What can we do for the crying - nervousness and her refusing to drink?

A. This can only be met through the suggestions, - for, as has been indicated, these periods come and go; and, as has been outlined heretofore, it is a lack of the coordinating between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic impulses or reflexes. (1553-17)

Even through the period of giving the massage, as well as the Appliance [Wet Cell Battery], let there be suggestions given to the body in that way not merely of speculation but as to positive activities of the body; planning, as it were, its activities for the next day. As an illustration: On

the morrow, or in the morning there will be certain activities. This should be very thoroughly outlined, very consistently suggested.

Thus, we will find a change in the activities of the body, bringing the reflexes to the brain centers with the nervous system in the ganglia where there are the closer associations with the sympathetic and suggestive nerve forces of the body. (5014-1)

Using Suggestive Therapeutics

From the standpoint of application, it is usually helpful for the person giving the suggestions to write out a script to be used as a guide when giving the suggestions. Otherwise it is easy to "blank out" while giving the suggestions and lose focus. Note that many of the examples given by Edgar Cayce contained explicit text to be used. Sometimes he would merely provide an outline and encourage the caregivers to include certain basic ideas in a script using their own words.

In putting together a script, keep the following points in mind:

  1. 1. Be sure that the intent and primary focus of the suggestions are coming from a spiritual perspective. Know that the suggestions can have a powerful influence on another human being. Even further, be aware that these suggestions are registering at a soul level. Be respectful of the other person. Be careful that the suggestions are not merely a form of personal control or manipulation. This is a sacred process. Form the text and deliver it in a prayerful, sacred manner.

  2. 2. Edgar Cayce would often include in the hypnotic script definite suggestions for biological healing. For example, he would use phrases such as, "the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems will coordinate." Or, he might give a general statement to the effect that "all the systems of the body will function in a normal healthy manner." In terms of nervous system regeneration, suggestions for improved eliminations (drainages) and better coordination of all the systems of the body would be appropriate.

Unless you have special expertise or knowledge about physiology, be careful about making the suggestions too specific. You may not necessarily know what specifically needs to be accomplished at a physical level. Trust the wisdom of the body by giving rather broad suggestions about improved coordination and drainages. You may be able to use some of Cayce's general health suggestions contained in the texts of the excerpts cited above.

  3. 3. Include some specific suggestions about behaviors or activities that need improvement. This could be simple activities of daily living such as being able to get dressed or feed oneself. The suggestions may pertain to behavioral problems such as arguing, fighting, or treatment noncompliance. Specific suggestions may address deficit symptoms such as the loss of memory or cognitive abilities. The suggestions may deal with emotional problems such as depression or anxiety. Sometimes Edgar Cayce would recommend that the script should list the activities that the person will be expected to participate in during the day. Naturally, this aspect of the script will be a personal matter that will be specific to each person's condition which may change on a day to day basis.

  4. 4. Keep the suggestions positive. Even when the person is doing something that they shouldn't be doing, find a way to express it as a positive. Whenever there is the suggestion, it should be not as "There WON'T be," but "You WILL do so and so, see?" (1553-17)

  5. 5. The tendency is for most people to make the script too short and then feel as if they have run out of suggestions after only a few minutes. Ideally, the script should be several paragraphs long. Each paragraph may deal with one of the above points.

For example, the first paragraph may contain two or three concise sentences of a spiritual nature to set the tone of the session. You may speak of love (love of God, love of others, love of self). Seek to get in touch with the soul of the person you are working with.

The second paragraph may contain two or three sentences focusing on the physical aspect of healing. The third paragraph can address specific behaviors or activities. A fourth paragraph may summarize the above points and close with a spiritual emphasis of hope and positive expectation.

Delivering the Script

When delivering the hypnotic suggestions, here are some key points to remember:

  1. 1. Attune yourself to the healing process. Be a suitable vehicle for the Creative Forces. You will have to find your own process to reach attunement. There are various forms of meditation which are helpful in this regard. As noted above, be in a prayerful state when giving the suggestions as well as the physical treatment. Realize that an important aspect of spirituality is the spirit in which you do things - the spirit of application.

  2. 2. Repeat each suggestion 3 - 5 times. You can do this in various ways. You could repeat specific sentences or paragraphs. You can repeat the whole text numerous times during the treatment session. If you give the suggestions in the pre-sleep (bedtime) mode, you will need to complete the text in the first few minutes after the person has fallen asleep. After 5 or 10 minutes the suggestions will not be as effective.

Of course, if you are giving a massage or spinal adjustment, or such, where you cannot read the text you will have to improvise. But being familiar with the text and being aware of some of the issues involved for each individual is helpful. During certain treatments such as the electrotherapy, it is easier and sometimes very helpful to have the text in front of you during the session. The text is merely a tool to assist with the hypnotic process, it is not an end in itself. Use it accordingly.

  3. 3. If the person receiving the suggestions shows resistance to the suggestions, then rethink the text to see where the source of resistance is. Most people are accepting of the suggestions that they are loved and that their bodies are being healed. Behavioral suggestions sometimes elicit resistance if the person is not very deeply into trance. When dealing with resistance, do not make a big deal over it. Either find another more acceptable way of stating the suggestion or wait until the person is in a deeper state of hypnosis before making the suggestions which are causing the resistance.

If the person is resistant to the whole idea of making suggestions, then alter your style accordingly. For example, when giving treatments you can use an educational approach to suggestion. You can simply explain what the treatments are for and how they will affect the body. "The massage will relax your body and help the circulation to flow better." "The spinal adjustment I am now making will relieve pressure on the nerves along the spine and improve nervous system coordination." "The battery treatment will help the nerves in your brain to function more normally."

Cayce advised health care practitioners to talk to their patients when giving these kinds of suggestions. It is a conversational approach to hypnosis based on the premise that most people will go into an altered state of consciousness when receiving certain types of physical treatment (e.g., massage, spinal manipulation, electrotherapy, etc.). Many health care professionals already use this approach either consciously or unconsciously.

  4. 4. You may experience some self-consciousness when first applying suggestive therapeutics. This is normal. Just keep in mind the purpose for which you are doing it. When done properly, this is a deeply spiritual process. Remember to work at spiritual attunement and you will be able to set aside personal feelings of inadequacy and self-consciousness when doing suggestive therapeutics.

To conclude this section on suggestive therapeutics, we will focus on a more expansive aspect of suggestion. Edgar Cayce noted that the environment itself is a powerful source of suggestion. Cayce maintained that the environment acts upon an individual in a suggestive manner through the sensory and sympathetic nervous systems (271-5). Therefore a supportive, constructive milieu creates a positive influence on the nervous systems of persons undergoing treatment.

We could use an analogy here from computer science. We can think of the brain as hardware and the mind as software. While undertaking the reconstruction of the hardware (nerve regeneration), it is essential to provide positive, constructive software (mental programming) for the system. Suggestive therapeutics and the maintenance of a healing, therapeutic environment are two means of providing healthy software via the power of suggestion.

The Cayce readings insist that compassion as manifested in gentleness, kindness, patience, and caring, is a profound expression of spirituality and an essential aspect of therapeutic milieu. In an institutional setting, therapeutic milieu should be considered more than just a clean facility with adequate programs for exercise and recreation. Spiritual qualities, as manifested by the staff, provide the basis for the therapeutic process. In the home setting, the same principles apply on a more limited scale.

Sample Script

Based on examples provided by Edgar Cayce, here is a sample script that you can use as a starting point in creating your own text. Adapt it to meet the needs of your unique situation. Put it into your own words so that you can deliver it in a relaxed confident manner.

"As you relax during this treatment, you will experience quiet, rest, peace, happiness and joy. You will know that you are loved and feel that love deep within. And as Jesus taught, you will love God with all your heart, mind and soul, and others as yourself. At a deep soul level you will become more aware of your soul's purpose for being alive. At all levels you will seek to express your soul's purpose in constructive ways. Your mind will function more normally and this will give you great pleasure."

"These treatments will help to bring healing to your nervous system and physical body. There is being created more coordination in the nervous system. The eliminating systems are removing toxins from the body. There are improved drainages throughout the whole system. The foods that you eat will provide nourishment to your body."

"You will be calm and cooperative to those around you at all times. You will dress yourself and feed yourself. This will make you feel happy and proud. You will look forward to doing these therapies and enjoy the attention that you are given. You remember the names of those around you."

"You are being healed -- you are becoming more whole at all levels. The divine energy within you is rejuvenating your body, mind and spirit."

Excerpts on Suggestive Therapeutics from the Cayce Readings

Then, in the suggestions that we would make when the body is sleeping, resting, there should be had those that will make for the better creative forces; for to reach the subconscious self it must be without the physical-mental self. See? Yet in the waking state, in the activity, there will be seen those reactions occasionally; at first possibly once a week, possibly once a day, possibly several times a day, dependent upon how persistent the suggestions are made with the active forces that are being set out in the system from the physical angle. See? Change the suggestions, then, in this manner, or to this:

There will be, in the whole of the physical and mental body, that response to that creative energy which is being carried into the system. Perfect coordination will come to the body. There will be normal reactions in every way and manner through the creative forces of divine love that is manifest in the hearts and minds of those about the body.

This should be repeated three to four times, until it has gradually reached the subconscious, or the unconscious, or the consciousness of the living forces that are impelling activity in a distorted condition, as to the balance in the mental forces of [271]. (271-5)

Then, to keep these in balance and to guide these impulses, so that there may be a controlling of the impulse to the nerve system, we would - with the manipulations and the applications made [electrotherapy] - give the suggestions for the body to respond in a normal manner in the impulses created by the vibrations that are set up from the elemental forces in the body. Such suggestions as this:

Now there is being created in the impulses from the ganglia in the system the normal reaction to the sensory and sympathetic systems of the body. And the reactions will be a perfectly normal balancing in the mental, physical and spiritual being on the body.

Q. When should the suggestions be given?

A. As the outline has been. When the manipulations and battery actions are being given. That means at the same time! (386-3)

Q. Would auto suggestion be beneficial to body? If so, give suggestion.

A. Auto suggestion is well in any case, especially of a developing mind, especially where coordination is result of nerve disturbance, either of a functional nature or mental disorder. In this particular case, such a suggestion as this, as the body is sinking to slumber or while in slumber:

The body is performing its normal functioning-proper. The mental and physical well-being is coordinating in a proper manner and will continue to do so until the body is well and strong and capable of resistance in every normal manner. The sympathetic forces of the body will function in a proper coordinating manner, with and for the best in the mental and physical developments for the body, and you will see same and tell me when awake of the things and conditions you experience.

Then, when these are told, from period to period, take cognizance of that as must be corrected by the imperfect conditions and obstructions as will present themselves to the body, making or altering the suggestions as needed for the correction of such mental and subconscious conditions as present themselves. These suggestions must be given, not merely as reading same, or something to be said, but with an earnestness as is desired for the body, and with that earnestness as is given will the response be. (758-25)

Q. Is there anything that can be done towards her mental attitude in carrying out the treatments?

A. As these are gone about properly, we will find there will be little or no great trouble in inducing the body to do these; for with the first and second application there will be those periods of suggestion when the massage is given for the necessary quiet, by being positive but not by forcing issues for the body....

Q. Any special suggestions to be used for this body?

A. These as we find will come more with the changes as are brought about. The suggestions as we find should be given when the massages are being given, and should never express anything other than constructive and quieting and peaceful reactions! But these should be a nominal result and not a set rote for the body. But quiet, loving, peaceful, gentle kindness finds its reaction in any and every form. (1310-1)

Q. How may we overcome her resistance to this treatment?

A. As indicated, it can only be done by the conversation - the gentle, gentle, gentle activity towards reasoning with the body; which apparently is reasoning against no reason. Yet ONCE taken, these we find will change a great deal.

Q. Do the results of her resistance, yelling and crying, raise her blood pressure or cause reactions offsetting benefits of treatment?

A. They have. Hence, as we have indicated, we will change the rate of the vibratory forces and work them with the body- influence or body-vibrations themselves - through the Radio- Active!

Make suggestions more and more; and if it becomes necessary, HYPNOTIZE the body. (1553-4)

Q. Are Dr. Garrett's mental suggestion treatments helpful and should they be continued? A. As we find, and as indicated in the manner in which the suggestions have been able to DIRECT the body in that as would be of help, these are helpful to the body.

We would give, then, that it is well to continue the suggestions; making them more and more of a spiritual as well as a positive nature to the mental body.

Q. Are there any special suggestions which he should make?

A. Just as indicated, suggest to the SPIRITUAL self as well as to the mental self.

Here are directions, for consideration at least, for any or all who would make mental suggestions to individuals: There is the physical body with its attributes - as the functioning of the organs of the body. Through this there is the MENTAL activity with its associations or its use of the flexures and reflexes of the same organism by the centers directed from or through impulses as controlled in the brain, see? Then there is the spiritual body, which acts with and through those activities of the physical body - and the nerves or mental body - to produce that which is creative or reproductive or activative in the ability for reproduction of itself in and through same.

Hence suggestions that are more and more of a constructive, creative nature, and directed to the impulses through which the mental forces and influences are active, will and do bring the greater helpful forces than mere positive statements to the mental to do or not do, see? (1553-5)

As the mind becomes longer distance between the hallucinations, when treatments are given, keep the suggestions until it reaches the inmost being of the body, correcting itself from within, through the Divine in self. (3996-1)

This (hypnotic) subjugation should be made by one that gives the massage and adjustments of the centers in the cerebrospinal system ....

This may be begun by the one so manipulating, insisting that the body (during the time of treatment) keep entirely quiet, and the operator talk continually, with the suggestion necessary for the improvement in the body, physical and mental, see? for, with these conditions, this would gradually bring about this subjugation with the centers where the cerebrospinal and sympathetic are at junctures with each other, as [are] seen in the cervical, the dorsal, and in the whole of the sacral and lumbar region. (4506-2)

In the applications for the mental forces in the body, as these changes come about, we will find that the suggestions as are given to the body - both in the normal state and especially as the body rests - will be much more responsive will they awaken within the body those of the spiritual abilities of a body. These should be given in a positive, but not in a forceful manner - that is, insisting or making - so that it becomes rote! but rather as that necessary, which must be felt as much by the one giving suggestions as one feeling them; for without the giving in the proper manner there cannot be the proper reception. (5483-1)

Autism, by Dr. John O.A. Pagano

[from his book One Cause, Many Ailments]

Ten years ago, few people had ever heard the word autism, but today it is recognized as a growing problem all across America and elsewhere. Three to six children of every thousand have autism and boys are four times more likely to have it than girls, according to the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Autism is a condition affecting children primarily from the toddler age into their twenties. Symptoms include a refusal or inability to speak; inability to control one's body, wherein the individual may throw up the hands suddenly or stare into space or at some inconsequential object; failure to appropriately engage with others socially; lack of interest in self-care and hygiene; or a tendency to violence, as in the case of a young girl who in one day broke every window in her house and punched holes in the walls.

On the Web site www.candidafree.net, Mark and Alyson Cobb include a quote from a Dr. Glen Gibson, of the University of Reading, Berkshire, England, who notes regarding autism that "Other symptoms may be hyperactivity, loss of eye contact, decreased vocalization (i.e., loss of language), poor academic and other similar social deficits. Other similar disorders exist. These include Asperger Syndrome (AS), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Persuasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), and many others, where symptoms are similar to autism but specific differences are demonstrated.”

In September and October of 2006, the Record newspaper of Bergen County, New Jersey, carried a six-part special report titled "In Autism's Grip." According to the Record report: "The number of children in New Jersey afflicted with autism has multiplied more than 30 times in the last 14 years: from 234 in 1991 to 7,400 in 2005, according to the Department of Education. The rising numbers may be evidence of an epidemic. Autism touches everyone. It creates headaches for parents and commands millions in tax dollars. But still there is no cure."

Researchers at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, a joint institute of Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) are studying a possible genetic defect in the condition and the brain chemistry involved. Many other research centers throughout the country have launched similar studies hoping to find the root cause of the condition.

In the second of the Record series on autism, Dr. Julia Bramwell, a pediatrician who runs the Parsippany office of the New Jersey Hyperebaric Oxygen Therapy Office, is quoted as saying "One of the many theories is that autism is an autoimmune problem that causes inflammation of the nervous system or the gut, so this (oxygen therapy) is one way to decrease the inflammation." (Washburn, 2006) What strikes me as profound is that they referred to inflammation of the gut as having a possible link to the condition.

In an Internet article by Max Bingham, 'Autism and the Human Gut Flora," he references Dr. Glen Gibson, who believes that there is a possible link between autism and the human gut flora. Dr. Gibson also explains that research in this area is sparse because of the unwillingness of the orthodox medical establishment to adopt treatments suggested by previous research into autism.

It appears, according to Dr. Gibson, that yeast (candida in particular), as well as clostridia, may play an important role in the development of autism. He suggests that the control of the growth of these species may reduce the severity of autism but is unlikely to offer a cure. The fact is, however, that this approach, dietary control, has never been truly researched since the orthodox medical establishment views this approach as "irrelevant." (It never fails to amaze me how such a conclusion can be reached when serious scientific research regarding a dietary approach to this disease has never been undertaken.)

So, the limited research has its drawbacks. Nevertheless, until true scientifically constructed testing is done, this is all we have to go on. Personally, I think it is relevant and should be looked upon with an open mind.

The following is taken directly from the article by Max Bingham, quoting Dr. Gibson's findings:

  1. 1. Following treatment with antifungal drugs and gluten and casein free diet, a child rated as having severe autism improved to such an extent that the child was classed as a higher functioning individual with autism.

  2. 2. It has been shown that children with autistic symptoms, after being tested for urinary metabolites, had extremely high values of tartaric acid. The only source of tartaric acid is yeast.

  3. 3. Many reports have suggested that autistic symptoms often occur after the child has been treated for otitis media (ear infections). It is common to treat otitis media with broad spectrum antibiotics. Intestinal overgrowth of yeast and certain anaerobic bacteria are a well documented outcome of the administration of broad spectrum antibiotics. (Kennedy and Volz, 1983; Danna et all, 1991; Ostfield et al, 1977; Kinsman et al, 1989; Van der Waaij, 1987; Samsonic et al, 1993, 1994b.) It is not clear however, why other children take large amounts of antibiotics for one reason or another but do not develop autism.

  4. 4. It is estimated that a large percentage of autistic children have a significant immune dysfunction.

  5. 5. It is not uncommon to find that children with autism experience improved symptoms following removal of gluten and casein from the diet.

  6. 6. Clostridium tetani is a ubiquitous anaerobic bacillus that is known to produce a potent neurotoxin. Once in the brain, the tetanus neurotoxin disrupts the release of neurotransmitters. This may explain the wide variety of behavioral deficits apparent in autism.

  7. 7. It has been shown that incompletely broken down portions of gluten and casein may be crossing the gut into the blood and having an opioid effect in autistic children. (Bingham, n.d.)

So, the bottom line in Dr. Gibson's account is that: While it will not cure this disorder (autism) modifications of gut flora function might improve symptoms significantly.

Johnson & Johnson won U.S. approval to market Risperdal (its best selling drug for schizophrenia) for autism symptoms in children ages five to sixteen. It can be prescribed for children who demonstrate signs of aggression, temper tantrums, deliberate self-injury, and rapid mood swings, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 6, 2006.

The most common side effects of Risperdal include drowsiness, constipation, fatigue, and weight gain, said the FDA. Risperdal relieved aggression by more than 50 percent in a study published in the August 1, 2002, edition of the New England Journal of Medicine. The drug, however, helped children who harm themselves, as well as those with symptoms such as temper tantrums, agitation, unstable moods, and aggression. The drug didn't treat the autism itself, only the symptoms. (Rapaport and Cortez, 2006)

What Would I do if I were faced with the problem of autism? I would certainly treat it as an offshoot of the Leaky Gut. I would take my patient off all refined sugar or sugar in any form. I would incorporate the gluten-free diet and keep them off oats, wheat, rye, and barley. No junk food would be allowed, as well as anything that would feed yeast. I would at the least recommend an intake of plenty of water and place the patient on a tow acid/high alkaline diet. Then I would wait and observe carefully, looking for small signs of improvement. They might be tiny signs at first – but it is moving in the right direction, not the speed of improvement, that would be significant. As always, time and patience would be the keys, in addition to the dietary changes!

There May Be Another Way

William Crook, M.D., has a section in his book The Yeast Connection Handbook that zeroes in on autism and adds light to the subject of LGS. He covers many aspects of the disorder from a different perspective and offers eight recommendations in dealing with autism. Of particular interest to me was the eighth: “After the course of antibiotics has been completed, I recommend continuing the Nystatin and probiotics, two or three times daily for several weeks. Here's why: Nystatin discourages the growth of yeast in the intestinal tract and the probiotics replace friendly bacteria. These products help heal the ‘leaky gut’, lessen the absorption of milk, wheat, and other allergens and decrease the chances of your child developing repeated ear problems." (Crook, 2000, pp.

8990)

For years the researchers have tried to discover a drug for autism at the cost of millions upon millions of dollars and have concluded: "No drugs are approved in the U.S. for calming children with autism, and their behavior can make it difficult for them to benefit from education and therapeutic programs . . . " (Washburn 2006, p. A14)

Has it ever occurred to the researchers to try a change in diet? Or would that just be too simple?

A Story Worth Telling

To my readers who may still not be convinced that poor diet or overuse of antibiotics play a significant role in cases of autism and/or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder), I offer the following email I received on November 13, 2007.

Dr. Pagano,

I wanted to share my story about my son S.D. At the age of four he was diagnosed with ADHD and some autistic spectrum symptoms. His symptoms included irritability, hyperactivity, anger, poor social skills, hand flapping, inability to follow directions, inappropriate behaviors and severe mood swings. He was in four different preschools, as each stated that they did not have the staff to handle such a boy.

I went to my pediatrician and was given a prescription. I decided at that time there had to be another way. I read and searched the Internet and spoke with many, many alternative doctors. There was one common theme that I found to be helping: diet. I threw out all the treatments my son was given, all the medicines, mega-doses of vitamins and injections and concentrated on diet.

What S.D. needed was a diet that corrected his years of antibiotic use and poor diet. He began eating fruits, vegetables, good protein and yogurt. It was a very basic, but healthy, plan. Slowly, I saw a change. He was not able to color in the lines at the age of five – and now at age eight he dreams of being an artist and creates impressive drawings and has the neatest writing of anyone in his class. He went from having no confidence and no friends, to a very confident boy with a healthy social life. His teachers used to call me almost every day with some problem, and today there are no calls and excellent reports.

Today, since his "gut" is repaired he is able to eat almost anything. However, if he does overdo it on a certain food, we begin to see some symptoms again. We do not fear that though because we know he can get right back on track and the symptoms simply disappear.

There are a few doctors who understand this natural approach to repair the gut and I am glad Dr. Pagano that you are one of them! Edgar Cayce told us the answer many years ago, we just need to listen

I had the pleasure of meeting young S.D. personally on November 9, 2007. Rarely have I met an eight-year-old with such keen perception and intelligence. I asked him what he thought played a part in his previous difficulty. His answer was sharp and direct: "When I ate chocolate bars and Tootsie Rolls, I went cuckoo!"
