Papers from a May 2002 symposium describe recent advances in alloy design and mechanical properties, quality assurance and MRI testing, and wear and corrosion-related wear.

Some specific subjects examined include fatigue of small bone fragment fixation plates made from low-nickel steel, the influence of macrophage cells on 316L stainless steel corrosion, wear-induced corrosion of orthopedic implant materials, and corrosion products generated from mechanically assisted crevice corrosion of stainless steel orthopedic implants.
